Independent MP Cathy McGowan has signalled that she may not continue to support the federal government on confidence and supply if there is a change of leadership at the National Party. McGowan has warned that her constituents in rural Victoria would not welcome more leadership turmoil in Canberra. The future of Nationals leader Michael McCormack has been under scrutiny, amid speculation that he may face a challenge from predecessor Barnaby Joyce.

The Liberal Party is estimated to have spent about $1m on contesting the Wentworth by-election, while independent candidate Kerryn Phelps is believed to have had a campaign budget of about $300,000. Sources within the Liberal Party have indicated that it is still well short of the campaign funding target it requires for the 2019 federal election, following a number of other by-elections in recent months. Phelps holds a 1,626-vote lead over Liberal candidate Dave Sharma, with 51.11% of the vote on a two-party preferred basis at 6pm on Monday. Phelps has ruled out claiming victory until all votes are counted.

There is growing speculation that the position of National Party leader Michael McCormack could be under threat, and some Nationals MPs are said to support restoring Barnaby Joyce to the role ahead of the next federal election. Joyce himself has emphasised that he has not lobbied his colleagues regarding a leadership spill, although he concedes that he would accept the party’s leadership if the opportunity arose. Nationals frontbenchers David Littleproud and Darren Chester both say a leadership spill is unlikely.

Don’t vote for Libs: Turnbull’s son

Original article by Andrew Clennell
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 12-Oct-18

Alex Turnbull has urged voters in Wentworth not to vote for the Liberal Party at the upcoming by-election. The son of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull claims that the Liberal Party has been taken over by the "hard right", and that voters need to send a message to the federal government on climate change. Liberal candidate Dave Sharma is regarded as slightly ahead of independent candidate Dr Kerryn Phelps in polling. The government needs to win the by-election to retain its one-seat majority in the House of Representatives.

Stokes rejects ABC: I didn’t plot to oust PM

Seven West Media chairman Kerry Stokes has refuted suggestions that himself and fellow media magnate Rupert Murdoch had any role in the demise of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull. The ABC has claimed in reports on its evening news bulletin and online that in the lead-up to the ousting of Turnbull, Murdoch told Stokes that Turnbull had to go. The reports were filed by the ABC’s national political editor, Andrew Probyn, who has previously worked for Seven West Media. Stokes says Probyn should therefore know that he does not engage in "speculative political gossip".

Boost women or pay the price, Credlin warns

Peta Credlin says the Liberal Party faces "electoral annihilation" if it does not achieve a 50/50 gender balance by 2025. Credlin, who was Tony Abbott’s chief of staff, says she is not a supporter of quotas, but that targets are reasonable, provided they are sufficiently enforced. Julia Banks, who recently stated she would not recontest her seat of Chisholm and who claimed she had been the target of bullying and intimidation, called for the Liberal Party to introduce gender quotas in a recent speech to the House of Representatives.

Andrew Bragg has advised that he will not be seeking Liberal Party preselection for the seat of Wentworth, despite having been one of the early favourites to win. The seat has been made vacant by the resignation of Malcolm Turnbull, with Liberal members due to vote on his replacement on 13 September. Recent polling that Bragg himself paid for has indicated that the Liberals would have a four per cent better chance of winning Wentworth if it had a female candidate; Bragg says he commissioned the polling as he had heard Prime Minister Scott Morrison had wanted a women candidate to contest Wentworth.

Malcolm Turnbull’s daughter scolds Liberal Party over female representation

Original article by Sam Clench

Daisy Turnbull Brown agrees with former foreign minister Julie Bishop that it is "unacceptable" that less than 25 per cent of federal Liberal MPs are female. Turnbull Brown, who is the daughter of former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, says it is not just parliament’s "kid/family unfriendly" nature that puts women off wanting to become MPs, but its toxic culture as well. Although not a big fan of the idea of quotas, Turnbull Brown says they may be the only way to boost the number of female federal Liberal MPs.

If you love your country, love each other, says PM

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 7-Sep-18

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for an end to the "politics of envy" in a speech to Liberal Party members in Albury, which is regarded as the party’s birthplace. Morrison noted that "we all love Australia", but he questioned whether "we love all Australians". Morrison used the speech as an opportunity to outline some of his views, including a belief that some people should not be taxed more in order that others are taxed less. His speech did not contain any new policy announcements.

Mathias Cormann and Mitch Fifield are among 10 ministers who resigned on 23 August, as the federal government’s leadership crisis deepened. A second leadership spill is expected to be held on 24 August, with Peter Dutton, Scott Morrison and Julie Bishop set to run. Coalition MPs who have backed a petition for a second ballot are believed to be close to securing the 43 signatures which Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says will be necessarily for a spill to be held; he has also threatened to resign from parliament if there is a second spill. Thirteen ministers in total have offered to resign since the leadership crisis began.
