The federal government’s proposed National Energy Guarantee aims to commit power retailers to a secure electricity supply that will meet carbon emissions reduction and reliability targets. National Party MPs met to discuss the NEG on 25 June, and are understood to want its proposed mechanism to be altered so as to favour suppliers of baseload power. Some members of both the Nationals and the Liberal Party are of the view that the NEG should not have an emissions reduction component.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull claims that Labor is attacking him because he is wealthy and successful. Labor will run commercials which contend that Turnbull will benefit from the federal government’s plans to reduce the company tax rate because of the large number of companies in which he has investments. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has accused Labor of engaging in class warfare, while Labor’ finance spokesman Jim Chalmers has accused Turnbull of siding with millionaires.

One Nation has lost the balance of power in the Senate following senator Brian Burston’s decision to quit the party and become an independent. He says the falling out over One Nation’s stance on the Federal Government’s corporate tax package contributed to his departure from the party, which will now hold just two seats in the upper house. Burston will continue to support the tax package, and he hopes One Nation’s remaining senators Pauline Hanson and Peter Georgiou will do so as well. The tax package requires the support of eight of the 10 crossbenchers.

One Nation senator Peter Georgiou says he voted against the Ensuring Integrity Bill because its public interest test was intended to block a merger between the construction and maritime unions that had already been approved. The bill failed to pass the upper house after dissent among the three One Nation senators prompted the party to vote against it. Meanwhile, former One Nation senator Fraser Anning says he had forecast in late 2017 that Georgiou and senator Brian Burston will leave One Nation within 12 months. Anning has joined Katter’s Australian Party, after sitting as an independent since November.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten told Victorian Labor’s state conference on 27 May that inequality is increasing in Australia. With federal Labor due to face five by-elections on 28 July, Shorten flagged plans to reduce national debt, cut income taxes, and boost education and health funding if Labor wins the next election. The previous day had seen Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews promised to impose jail terms on employers who underpay staff or whose employees are killed on the job.

The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association has warned that oil and exploration costs would rise under proposals put forward by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson. The Federal Government had agreed to a number of concessions in return for One Nation’s support for its company tax package, including changes to the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax and a gas reservation scheme in Western Australia. One Nation subsequently withdrew its support for the tax package, although LNG producers still anticipate some changes to the PRRT.

Labor intends to retain its policy of increasing the highest marginal tax rate by two per cent to 49 per cent, which it announced in 2017 after the Federal Government opted not to extend the temporary deficit levy. Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says the Opposition is still of the view that it is inappropriate to limit tax relief to people on high incomes. Treasurer Scott Morrison says increasing the tax burden on high income-earners and business owners could impact on economic growth and the labour market.

There are concerns that Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s efforts to boost his number within the Labor party through deals with the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union have the potential to harm its prospects at the next federal election. His leadership is said to be safe at the moment, but there are a number of potential candidates in the wings should dissatisfaction with his ties to the CFMEU grow, including Chris Bowen, Tony Burke and Tanya Plibersek.

CFMEU boss wants Shorten to restore rights of workers

John Setka says that Labor has been criticised in the past for being a party that does not really stand for anything. However, the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union’s Victorian secretary says this seems to have changed under Bill Shorten. Setka says he is happy to endorse Shorten as an alternative prime minister, despite the fact that he used to represent the Australian Workers’ Union, with which Setka’s union has traditionally been at odds. Setka hopes Shorten takes action to restore the rights of workers if Labor wins the next federal election.

Police material likely to back claims Shorten donation investigation improper

Original article by David Marin-Guzman

The Federal Court has postponed a trial concerning the Registered Organisations Commission’s investigation into the Australian Workers’ Union, and ruled that the AWU should be granted access to documents pertaining to the case. The Australian Federal Police want the documents to be subject to public interest immunity, but Justice Tony North ruled that it would be unfair for the union to go to trial without having access to the documents. He said the redacted sections could support the AWU’s claim that the ROC’s investigation was undertaken for an "improper purpose". The ROC is investigating donations to the Australian Labor Party when Bill Shorten was the union’s national secretary.
