Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is expected to make changes to his frontbench team in late 2017, but some members of the Coalition’s conservative faction want a cabinet reshuffle to be undertaken much sooner. They are pushing for moderates George Brandis and Marise Payne to be dropped from cabinet and replaced with conservatives. The leaking of a speech at a private function by moderate Christopher Pyne provided the impetus for the conservative faction to push for change, with some suggesting that Turnbull’s leadership may at risk if they are not given more representation in cabinet.

China-born billionaire Chau Chak Wing has rejected claims that he has links to the Chinese Communist Party. Chau, who has been an Australian citizen for 20 years, has hit out after he was named in a television program about overseas donations to Australian political parties. Chau says he has never tried to seek any gain from donations made by himself or his companies to political parties. He notes that both of Australia’s major parties have solicited donations from him, and it has been revealed that one of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s campaign organisers approached Chau for a donation prior to the 2016 federal election.

Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm says he has agreed to a "loose" voting alliance with the newly-enlarged Australian Conservatives. They will co-operate when voting on issues on which they broadly agree, with the aim of curbing the influence of the Nick Xenophon Team in the upper house. Australian Conservatives founder Cory Bernadi says the new party would welcome any Liberal politicians who wish to defect. His party recently merged with Family First Australia.

The travel expenses of federal politicians have come under further scrutiny amid revelations that Australian Greens leader Richard Di Natale spent $A56,526 on travel during the first half of 2016. The Greens’ community services spokeswoman Rachel Siewert submitted claims for $A63,934 worth of travel expenses during the period. The Greens have criticised the high travel expenses of members of the major political parties, and Di Natale stresses that his team’s travel expenses were solely work-related.

Senator Cory Bernardi has declined to comment on speculation that he plans to leave the Liberal Party and establish a new conservative party. Bernardi established the Australian Conservatives website in mid-2016, and a recent message on the site said some "important campaigns" will be launched in 2017. There has also been speculation that the Australian Conservatives party will receive financial support from mining magnate Gina Rinehart, who has praised the policies of US president-elect Donald Trump.

He has also alleged that Hanson and Ashby tried to force him to resign, and claimed that One Nation policies were devised without any consultation with the party room.

One Nation won 11 seats in the 1998 election in Queensland, and the party aims to field candidates in at least 60 seats at the next state poll. The party’s state and national secretary, Jim Savage, stresses that One Nation will only contest seats if it can field goods candidate, and he says it has held talks with some former Liberal-National Party MPs who lost their seats at the last election. However, he adds that no sitting L-NP MPs have been approached about defecting.

One Nation has indicated that it is likely to support the Federal Government’s bills to reinstate the Australian Building & Construction Commission and establish a Registered Organisations Commission. One Nation has voted in favour of a bill to protect the rights of emergency services volunteers. Industrial relations spokesman Senator Malcolm Roberts says the party believes that volunteers should not be subject to union control, and it is likely to adopt the same principle when voting on the Government’s key industrial relations reforms.
