A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by 2.5 per cent to 46.5 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 28 February-1 March and 7-8 March 2015, also shows that support for the Australian Labor Party has fallen by 2.5 per cent to 53.5 per cent. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says support for the Coalition rose after Prime Minister Tony Abbott committed to sending 300 Australian troops to Iraq to help train the Iraqi army in its fight against the Islamic State. He adds that the Morgan Poll has consistently shown a short-term boost to prime ministers who commit Australian forces to international battlefields

Unions want more say on Labor leader

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 10-Mar-15

The Australian Labor Party’s rules for electing a federal leader will come under scrutiny at its triennial National Conference in July 2015. Ex-prime minister Kevin Rudd gained caucus approval in mid-2013 for changes which gave caucus and Labor’s rank-and-file members an equal say in the selection of a new party leader. However, the Transport Workers’ Union wants further changes which would give union members an equal vote in selecting a party leader. The push is supported by the Rail, Tram & Bus Union

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by 1.5 per cent to 44 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 14-15 and 21-22 February 2015, also shows that support for the Australian Labor Party has fallen by 1.5 per cent to 56 per cent. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that following a number of damaging leaks, the New South Wales election will be the next test for Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and a close result or a loss for Premier Mike Baird would increase the pressure on Abbott once again

The Liberal Party of Australia’s motion for a leadership spill failed on 9 February 2015, although the future of Prime Minister Tony Abbott remains tenuous. The motion to dump Abbott was defeated by just 11 votes, but the leadership turmoil will put the Federal Government’s Budget strategy under scrutiny. Abbott has conceded that the May 2014 Budget may have been overly ambitious, and many of the initiatives outlined on Budget night are in doubt. There will also be much uncertainty about the upcoming 2015 Budget

Senior members of the Liberal Party of Australia are believed to have given Prime Minister Tony Abbott six months to repair his reputation among voters. If he fails, he may be replaced as the leader of the party, possibly by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. Abbott has recently made a series of mistakes that made him unpopular even within his own party
