Action on climate action and housing affordability are among the key demands that the Victorian Greens will seek in return for supporting Labor if it is unable to form a majority government after the state election. Amongst other things, the Greens would push for a total ban on onshore and offshore gas exploration and production, a statewide ban on logging in native forests, and capping rent increases in line with wages. Premier Daniel Andrews has consistently ruled out any deals with the Greens or independent candidates.

Liberal leader Matthew Guy has committed to spending billions on reducing traffic congestion if he wins the next Victorian election, to be held in 2018. His plan involves removing more than 50 of the worst traffic intersections in Melbourne and Geelong, with underpasses to replace traffic lights and roundabouts. Guy cited figures that show that 74 per cent of Melburnians use cars each day to go to work as justification for his plan, with the Liberals aiming to remove the first 35 intersections between 2018 and 2022.

New spending of similar magnitude has been pledged by both major parties on hospitals, in the final week of the campaign for the Victorian state election on 29 November 2014. However, there are also significant differences, with the Government favouring the Monash Children’s hospital and the Northern Hospital in Epping, while the Australian Labor Party has a focus on Orygen Youth Health in Parkville and a women’s and children’s hospital in Sunshine. Even the details for the proposed heart hospital in Clayton promised by both sides differ

Both the Liberal and National parties are running candidates in the seat of Buninyong for the Victorian state election on 29 November 2014. While the Coalition partners normally allocate preferences to each other, the Nationals’ Sonia Smith has refused to back the Liberals’ Ben Taylor. The reason is the latter’s statement at an Australian Christian Lobby event that he would like to see a repeal of laws making abortions legal. Taylor notes however that the Government has no plans for such a reform

The Australian Labor Party on 26 October 2014 staged its official campaign launch for the Victorian state election in November. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews made increased spending on education a major plank in his platform, pledging $A1.3bn in total. Many of the measures consist of assistance payments to school students from low-income households. However $A320m will also be allocated to supporting and relaunching TAFE colleges. Meanwhile federal Labor leader Bill Shorten mocked Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s failure to campaign with Premier Denis Napthine in Victoria
