The Transport Workers’ Union’s national secretary Tony Sheldon and United Voice’s Tara Moriarty have chosen not to seek nomination to replace Labor’s Sam Dastyari in the Senate. Former New South Wales premier Kristina Keneally now seems certain to replace Dastyari. She gained 45.12 per cent of the two-party-preferred vote in the Bennelong by-election in late 2017. Meanwhile, there is speculation that Labor will offer Sheldon a Senate seat at the next federal election, and Moriarty is tipped to contest the next state election.

Meanwhile, backbencher David Littleproud will take on Joyce’s former portfolio of agriculture.

Some members of the Australian Labor Party’s New South Wales right faction have expressed concern that Sam Dastyari was pressured into resigning from the Senate. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has praised Dastyari’s decision to resign in the wake of revelations about his links with China. There is speculation that Dastyari’s seat in the upper house could be filled by Kristina Keneally if she fails to win the upcoming by-election in the seat of Bennelong. United Voice’s Tara Moriarty is also seen as a contender to replace Dastyari.

Former senator Richard Colbeck is expected to replace the Liberal Party’s Stephen Parry in the upper house, after the latter advised that he will resign after receiving confirmation that he has British citizenship by descent. Meanwhile, acting Prime Minister Julie Bishop and acting Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek have both dismissed a push by the Greens and some Liberals for an audit of the citizenship status of all federal parliamentarians.

Canavan crisis is bad for Adani

Original article by Matthew Stevens
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 26 : 27-Jul-17

Matt Canavan’s decision to step aside as Resources Minister over dual citizenship concerns could have implications for Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine. Canavan is a keen advocate of both coal and the Carmichael project, and he is highly likely to have approved a federal loan to Adani via the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. A final investment decision on the first stage of the Carmichael project is conditional on NAIF funding for the rail line component of the project. The question of whether the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism will be triggered in 2018 is also uncertain after Canavan stood aside.

Senator Matt Canavan will seek a High Court ruling on his eligibility to remain in Parliament after discovering that he may hold dual citizenship in Italy. Canavan has stepped down as the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia pending confirmation of his eligibility to be elected to Parliament. Canavan was born in Australia, but recently found out that his mother had applied for him to become an Italian citizen in 2006 without his knowledge or consent. Foreign-born Greens senators Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters were recently forced to quit Parliament due to their dual citizenship.

MPs rush to confirm true-blue credentials

Federal MPs who were born overseas have moved to clarify that they are eligible to hold seats in Parliament after Greens senator Larissa Waters was forced to resign after discovering that she had dual citizenship. Waters was born in Canada but was not aware that she was a Canadian citizen. Greens senator Scott Ludlam also resigned recently after discovering that he still held New Zealand citizenship. The resignation of Waters and Ludlam means the Government needs the support of just nine non-Coalition senators to pass bills, but cross-benchers have cautioned against taking advantage of this.

Demand for PM to purge frontbench

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 28-Jun-17

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is expected to make changes to his frontbench team in late 2017, but some members of the Coalition’s conservative faction want a cabinet reshuffle to be undertaken much sooner. They are pushing for moderates George Brandis and Marise Payne to be dropped from cabinet and replaced with conservatives. The leaking of a speech at a private function by moderate Christopher Pyne provided the impetus for the conservative faction to push for change, with some suggesting that Turnbull’s leadership may at risk if they are not given more representation in cabinet.

Senator Rod Culleton has accused One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and her chief of staff James Ashby of "disunity and distrust" in a statement in which he announced his resignation from the party. He has also alleged that Hanson and Ashby tried to force him to resign, and claimed that One Nation policies were devised without any consultation with the party room.

Senate chaos as Day challenged

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 5 : 2-Nov-16

The High Court will be asked to rule on the validity of Family First senator Bob Day’s re-election, due to concerns about the receipt of rent payments from the Federal Government for his electoral office. Day has a pecuniary interest in the property in question, and the court may order a recount if his re-election is deemed to have been unconstitutional. This could affect the Coalition’s prospects of passing its industrial relations reforms in the Senate, as Day has generally sided with the Government. Meanwhile, Day has resigned from the Senate with immediate effect, after a deal to bail out his home building firm collapsed.
