Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has suggested allowing only those who are eligible to vote to make political donations. The issue of political donations gained national prominence after revelations that Australian Labor Party senator Sam Dastyari accepted payments from Chinese-backed companies. The Liberal Party of Australia wants the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters to suggest appropriate changes, but the Opposition says the matter is urgent.

Incoming senator Pauline Hanson will consult with both sides of politics before deciding her stance on the Australian Building & Construction Commission. However, Hanson has indicated that she opposes "union thuggery" and says small contractors and subcontractors must be protected from such union practices. Hanson is yet to decide her position on proposed company tax cuts, but warns of the risk that companies may relocate to countries with lower tax rates unless the tax burden is reduced.

It is estimated that bookmakers spent about $A150m on advertising during television broadcasts of sports events. Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner says a proposed ban is "draconian" and unnecessary, adding that Seven already has stricter internal rules on the issue than required by the advertising code. Sportsbet and CrownBet say they would agree to reduce their advertising during sports telecasts, but they oppose the blanket ban that is being advocated by crossbenchers Nick Xenophon and Andrew Wilkie.

One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson has identified immigration and foreign investment as her key priorities if she is elected to the Senate on 2 July 2016. Hanson is confident of winning a Queensland seat in the Senate, and some public opinion polls suggest that she will be elected to the upper house two decades after she first made her present felt in the nation’s parliament. Hanson is critical of Coalition policies such as the national broadband network and the construction of a new submarine fleet, while she has reservations about the proposed company tax cuts.

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: online : 17-Jun-16

Roy Morgan Research has presented the latest Australia State of the Nation, with the focus on the 2016 Federal Election. Economic issues are still the main concern for Australians. The 7-Eleven wage exploitation scandal and a Fair Work Commission ruling against Coles have made voters sensitive to problems related to industrial relations. Australia’s real unemployment level is much higher than suggested by official figures. Roy Morgan’s unemployment & under-employment rate is at 18.1 per cent, versus the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ unemployment figure of 5.7 per cent. Australians’ voting intentions suggest that Malcolm Turnbull will to be re-elected as Prime Minister on 2 July 2016.

Some 52 past and current MPs have declared a financial interest in residential properties in Canberra since the 2013 federal election. While the majority have not replied to enquiries as to whether they had claimed a travel allowance for staying in their Canberra home, Australian Labor Party MP Brendan O’Connor is the only one to have stated that he did not make such a claim. Five MPs have acknowledged that they have claimed both the travel allowance and a tax deduction associated with their Canberra home.
