Former defence minister Christopher Pyne has come under scrutiny over his new role as an adviser to Ernst & Young regarding the defence industry. Labor senator Penny Wong contends that Pyne is in breach of the federal government’s ministerial code of conduct, which continues to apply for 18 months after an MP leaves parliament. Wong and Centre Alliance senator Rex Patrick have urged Prime Minister Scott Morrison to intervene. Pyne retired from politics at the 18 May election.

Senate crossbencher Cory Bernardi has signalled that he may consider rejoining the Liberal Party. Bernardi says he has not held any such talks with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, but he would be open to doing so. He adds that his main priority in the new parliament will be to support the Coalition’s legislative agenda. Eric Abetz and Dean Smith are among the Liberal senators who say Bernardi would be welcomed back into the Liberal fold. He resigned to form the Australian Conservatives party during the tenure of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Labor will hold its first caucus meeting in the wake of its election defeat on 30 May, but new leader Anthony Albanese has indicated that the new shadow ministry will not be announced for several days. Former leader Bill Shorten is said to have expressed interest in the health portfolio, although Catherine King is believed to be keen to retain the portfolio. Some Labor MPs do not think Shorten deserves a frontbench portfolio, while former Labor minister Stephen Conroy says he still has much to contribute.

Resources Minister Matt Canavan contends that Labor has learned nothing from how Queenslanders voted in the federal election. Canavan was attacking new Labor leader Anthony Albanese and deputy leader Richard Marles for refusing to say whether they support Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland’s Galilee Basin, with the Basin having estimated thermal coal reserves of 27 billion tonnes. Albanese stated in 2018 that "there’s no market" for thermal coal, and that the Adani mine is "a climate change issue".

Jim Chalmers has emerged as Anthony Albanese’s most likely rival for the Labor leadership, after shadow treasurer Chris Bowen announced that he will not be a contender. Bowen believes that he would have won the caucus ballot, but concedes that he lacked sufficient support to gain the rank-and-file vote. There is now strong support for Albanese within Bowen’s NSW Right faction, while most of the Left faction also supports Albanese. Chalmers is expected to decide whether to make a tilt for the leadership on 23 May.

Bruised Bowen wades into ALP battle

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen intends to contest the federal Labor leadership, even though many members of his NSW Right faction intend to support Left faction contender Anthony Albanese. Some members of the Right faction argue that Bowen should not contest the leadership as he is too closely linked to the party’s tax policies that were rejected by voters, including its proposal to scrap franking credit refunds. Bowen concedes that this policy was controversial, but he says other factors also cost Labor the election.

Shorten draws on spirit of ‘It’s time’

Original article by Andrew Tillett

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten echoed the words of former Labor prime minister Gough Whitlam in a speech at Bowman Hall in Blacktown on 16 May. The Sydney venue was the scene of Whitlam’s iconic ‘It’s time’ speech 47 years ago, and like Whitlam in 1972, Shorten described the 2019 election as a choice between the ‘habits and fears of the past’ and the ‘demands and opportunities of the future’. Shorten used his speech to reiterate Labor’s key polices, including action on climate change and reversing penalty rate cuts.
