ABC presenters Jon Faine and Phillip Adams are among the public broadcaster’s employees who will address rallies organised by lobby group ABC Friends. The rallies are being held in response to the funding cuts that were announced in the Federal Government’s May 2018 Budget. The ABC’s director of news, Gaven Morris, has issued a memo to staff advising them not to engage in the political debate concerning the broadcaster.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has made his sixth complaint to the ABC in just five months with regard to the public broadcaster’s news coverage. The latest complaint concerns the ABC’s reports on the selection of the date for five upcoming by-elections. Meanwhile, Fifield has stressed the need for the ABC to be impartial and independent, and argues that all media organisations in Australia should be open to feedback from politicians and the general public.

Original article by Joe Kelly

Opposition leader Bill Shorten has denied suggestions that his office doctored the transcript of a TV interview given by Labor MP Linda Burney. Her staffer, David Tan, transcribed the interview that appeared on Sky News. Tan contends that he made an "innocent mistake", while Burney says Tan has been counselled over what has been described as a "grossly inaccurate transcription". Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the transcript amounted to a "deliberate act of fabrication", while Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the interview was "falsified".

Leyonhjelm’s despair for erosion of press freedom

Original article by Simon Benson
The Australian – Page: 2 : 26-Mar-18

Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm has accused the Abbott and Turnbull governments of the biggest crackdown on freedom of the press for many years through various laws. Leyonhjelm contends the crackdown began with Abbott in 2013, when Leyonhjelm says Abbott tried to make political mileage out of national security. Commenting on proposed espionage legislation that critics say could see journalists jailed for just doing their job, Attorney-General Christian Porter says he does not think any Australian would support the release of information that might risk the lives of ASIO or AFP staff or result in the death of an Australian.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has defended the Federal Government’s move to make the ABC disclose the salaries of presenters who are paid more than $A200,000 and to require the public broadcaster to be "fair and balanced". He was responding to a speech by ABC MD Michelle Guthrie, in which she argued that changes to the ABC’s charter were not necessary and were politically motivated. The changes were part of a deal struck with One Nation to secure cross-media ownership reforms in the Senate.

PM takes on Jones over gas bans

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 6-Oct-17

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his ministers are increasingly coming to the view that radio broadcaster Alan Jones is engaging in double standards on the question of gas prices. Jones has publicly advocated against onshore gas development in New South Wales for a number of years. Regulators, business and governments are generally of the opinion that allowing onshore gas development in NSW and other states would help to lower gas prices, and the Federal Government sees Jones’s constant attacks on it over gas prices as somewhat hypocritical.

The Australian Press Council is facing growing scrutiny over the appointment of GetUp’s deputy chair Carla McGrath to its board. Shadow communications minister Michelle Rowland says confidence in the APC may be undermined by the appointment of a senior member of the political activist group, and she has stressed the need for the APC to ensure that it avoids any conflicts of interest. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is a former director of Getup.

Calls for McGrath to resign

Former Australian Press Council chairman David Flint says GetUp’s deputy chair Carla McGrath should never have been considered for a position on the APC board. He adds that the media cannot have confidence in the APC and its judgments if there are any concerns about political conflicts of interest. Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance CEO Paul Murphy and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield have also questioned McGrath’s appointment, while more News Corp newspapers intend to boycott APC rulings in which McGrath participates.

Murdoch’s clout the big query

Original article by Aaron Patrick
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 36 : 16-May-16

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has traditionally been regarded as having a significant influence on the political landscape in Australia and abroad. However, some experts believe that the power of the Murdoch press to influence election outcomes is waning amid the rise of digital disruptors, and the 2016 federal election may reinforce this perception. Former News Limited CEO Kim Williams argues that all newspapers are losing their power to influence election outcomes.
