Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has marked the second anniversary of his government by ruling out an early election, stating that Labor will not to go to the polls until it has addressed the cost-of-living crisis. He adds that reducing the inflation rate is his government’s top priority, and Labor will not focus on its re-election campaign until 2025. Albanese has also noted that handing down a budget amid the current economic conditions is challenging, with the need to balance providing cost-of-living relief with the focus on combating inflation.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed support for imposing age limits on children’s use of social media. Albanese says that many parents are "worried sick" that their children have access to inappropriate material online, while they are also concerned about the mental health effects of social media. He adds that News Corp’s campaign for children under the age of 16 to be restricted from having social media accounts is a "really positive response" to the issue.

Australia, Canada and NZ warn Israel against catastrophic Rafah ground offensive

Original article by Daniel Hurst
The Guardian Australia – Page: Online : 16-Feb-24

The prime ministers of Australia, Canada and New Zealand have said a joint statement that Israel must "listen to its friends" and not mount a ground offensive on Rafah. Anthony Albanese, Justin Trudeau and Christopher Luxon stated such an offensive would be "catastrophic" and "devastating", with there being "simply nowhere else for civilians to go". Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has committed to an offensive on Rafah in order to destroy Hamas and rescue hostages, but only after civilians are allowed to leave the "battle zone". However, he has not yet stated where they would be permitted to go, and what safeguards, if any, would be put in place to protect them.

Albanese backs sports bodies’ Australia Day snub

Original article by Rhiannon Down
The Australian – Page: 3 : 23-Jan-24

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the nation needs to stop looking for areas in which "we can be outraged". With Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia not to acknowledge Australia Day at the Gabba Test or the Australian Open on Friday, Albanese refused to back calls by NSW Premier Chris Minns for the two sporting bodies to reconsider their decision. Opposition leader Peter Dutton says Albanese needs to stand up as the leader of our country and tell Cricket Australia and other "corporate wokes" that we should be celebrating Australia Day, while Nationals Leader David Littleproud says it is not the job of sporting codes to "set the moral compass".

Albanese had previously held formal talks with Li in Jakarta in September; it was the first meeting between an Australian prime minister and a Chinese premier since Scott Morrison held talks with the late Li Keqiang in Bangkok in November 2019. Meanwhile, Albanese and Li have agreed to a number of initiatives aimed at improving relations between the two nations, including the introduction of multi-entry visas.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated that he will raise issues such as human rights and China’s growing presence in the South China Sea during his upcoming official visit to Beijing and Shanghai. The family of Chinese-Australian writer Yang Hengjun has urged Albanese to also raise his case with Chinese officials. Yang has been detained in China for nearly five years without receiving an official verdict on alleged espionage offences. Yang’s two sons are concerned that he will die from medical neglect if he is not released soon. Journalist Cheng Lei recently returned to Melbourne after three years’ detention in China on similar charges.

Original article by Geoff Chambers
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 30-Oct-23

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended his hectic overseas travel schedule, arguing that personally engaging with world leaders is critical at a time of significant economic and security shocks. Albanese has come under scrutiny over his international travel itenary amid the domestic cost-of-living crisis, a high inflation rate and rising oil prices. Albanese recently returned from his first official visit to the US, while his upcoming trip to China will be the first by an Australian prime minister since 2016. Albanese used a speech on his final day in Washington to emphasise the need to engage with China and to develop understanding, given that the nation accounts for 25 per cent of Australia’s exports. Albanese will also attend the Pacific Islands Forum and the APEC summit in coming weeks.

Voice leaders pen rival letter of angst to Albanese

Original article by Tom McIlroy
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 24-Oct-23

Some indigenous groups issued a 12-point open letter on Sunday in which they blamed the loss of the referendum on an Indigenous voice to parliament on "a shameful act" by Australian voters. However, not all Indigenous Voice advocates agreed with the blunt language used, and they are preparing to send their own private response to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It is understood that their letter will include significant criticism of the conduct of the Voice campaign and of interventions by leading No advocates including Opposition leader Peter Dutton and the Coalition’s Indigenous Australians spokeswoman Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.
