Prime Minister Scott Morrison has told broadcaster Alan Jones that the federal government will not abandon the Paris climate change targets, in spite of pressure from conservatives to do so. Morrison said that climate change is an incredibly important issue for nations in the Pacific region, with Morrison noting the region is very important to Australia in terms of strategic influence. The government has previously stated that abandoning the Paris targets could jeopardise a free trade agreement with the European Union. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has joined the Coalition’s backbench energy and environment committee, has called for the Renewable Energy Target to be scrapped immediately.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for an end to the "politics of envy" in a speech to Liberal Party members in Albury, which is regarded as the party’s birthplace. Morrison noted that "we all love Australia", but he questioned whether "we love all Australians". Morrison used the speech as an opportunity to outline some of his views, including a belief that some people should not be taxed more in order that others are taxed less. His speech did not contain any new policy announcements.

‘China’s a sovereign country’: PM unfazed by ABC censoring

Original article by
The New Daily – Page: Online : 3-Sep-18

China has cut off access to the ABC’s website and its apps, claiming that they have breached its internet rules and regulations. Access to the website and apps was cut off on 22 August, the day after the federal government announced it would prevent two Chinese firms from taking part in the roll-out of Australia’s 5G mobile network. However, sources within the Chinese government suggest it is unlikely the two events are linked. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was not bothered by China’s censorship of the ABC.

Original article by Fergus Hunter
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: Online : 4-Sep-18

Construction, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union official John Setka has deleted a tweet that had prompted Prime Minister Scott Morrison to threaten the CFFMEU with deregistration. The highly inappropriate tweet showed a picture of Setka’s children holding a poster with profanities on it that targeted the Australian Building & Construction Commission. Morrison said the tweet was "the straw that breaks the camel’s back", and that the CFMMEU has acted like a bunch of thugs under Setka. He called on Bill Shorten to sever Labor’s ties with the CFMMEU.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison warned energy companies on 3 September that he may impose a royal commission on them if they do not react favourably to measures aimed at reducing electricity prices. Australian Energy Council CEO Sarah McNamara said she does not believe a royal commission into the sector is needed, given the number of inquiries that it has been subject to, including the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s recent major review. Morrison said he was putting the big power companies "on notice".

Mathias Cormann and Mitch Fifield are among 10 ministers who resigned on 23 August, as the federal government’s leadership crisis deepened. A second leadership spill is expected to be held on 24 August, with Peter Dutton, Scott Morrison and Julie Bishop set to run. Coalition MPs who have backed a petition for a second ballot are believed to be close to securing the 43 signatures which Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says will be necessarily for a spill to be held; he has also threatened to resign from parliament if there is a second spill. Thirteen ministers in total have offered to resign since the leadership crisis began.

National Party MP Kevin Hogan claims he will move to the crossbenches if Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is replaced as Liberal leader on 24 August. Hogan, who represents the seat of Page in New South Wales, says the Liberal Party does not "deserve my support". It is understood that the Nationals will move to reassert their power within the Coalition agreement if Turnbull is ousted, while Nationals leader Michael McCormack says the decision as to who should be Liberal leader is up to its MPs.

Latest Morgan Poll shows Julie Bishop (64%) easily preferred as Prime Minister to Bill Shorten (36%)

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 24-Aug-18

Deputy Liberal Leader Julie Bishop has easily the strongest performance against Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in a head-to-head matchup while fellow leadership aspirant Scott Morrison is in a virtual "dead-heat" with Shorten. Julie Bishop (64%) clearly leads Bill Shorten (36%) while Bill Shorten (50.5%) and Scott Morrison (49.5%) can barely be separated according to a special Snap SMS Morgan Poll conducted with a cross-section of more than 2,000 Australian electors on Thursday. An earlier SMS Morgan Poll showed PM Malcolm Turnbull (54%) ahead of Shorten (46%) while Shorten (62%) easily leads Peter Dutton (38%). Bishop’s strong performance in a head-to-head match-up with Shorten shows that if the Liberal Party wants its best chance of winning the next Federal Election Julie Bishop is the smart choice to lead the party. Follow this link to see the latest Morgan Poll results with interview between Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine and ABC TV’s Matter of Fact with Stan Grant to follow.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull could face another leadership challenge before Parliament rises for two weeks. Supporters of Peter Dutton have petitioned Coalition MPs to hold a partyroom meeting and another leadership ballot on 23 August. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has told Turnbull that he has lost the support of the partyroom, while Attorney-General Christian Porter has confirmed that he has sought advice from the Solicitor-General regarding Dutton’s eligibility to be in parliament. His financial interest in two childcare centres that receive government subsidies could potentially be a breach of the Constitution.

Snap Morgan Poll shows electors prefer Turnbull to Shorten but Shorten preferred to Dutton

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 23-Aug-18

A special Snap SMS Morgan Poll conducted with a cross-section of more than 1,250 Australian electors on August 22 shows that Malcolm Turnbull (52%) is seen as the Better Prime Minister compared to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten (44.5%), while a further 3.5% cannot say. However, Bill Shorten (59%) is clearly seen as the Better PM compared to Liberal Party leadership challenger Peter Dutton (36.5%), while a further 4.5% cannot say. Analysis by gender shows that 53% of men regard Turnbull as the Better PM, a lead of 10% over Shorten (43%); Turnbull has a lead of 5% as Better PM among women (51%, compared with 46% for Shorten). Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says that if the Liberal Party chose to elect Peter Dutton as the new Liberal Party Leader they would be setting Bill Shorten and the ALP on course for victory at the next Federal Election. She notes that Dutton is not significantly stronger in his home State of Queensland than any other state; just 40% of electors in Queensland see Dutton as the Better PM, while 53% say Shorten would be the Better PM.
