Rio Tinto has extended a lithium exploration partnership with Everest Metals with regard to the latter’s Rover Project in Western Australia. Everest has advised that Rio Tinto Exploration will commence a drilling program to assess the hard rock lithium reserves at the Rover Project. The Rio Tinto subsidiary struck an initial exploration deal with Everest in March 2021, before taking an 80 per cent stake in the venture in October 2022. WA is the world’s biggest source of hard rock lithium.

Rio Tinto has advised that drilling results from its Winu copper-gold discovery in Western Australia continue to show promise. However, Rio stated that it is not yet in a position to determine the possible size and quality of the mineralisation, or to give an estimate of a mineral resource. Winu is located in the Paterson Range, and Rio is investigating whether its acreage there is big enough to support a number of copper mines.

UK gold miner eyes dual listing

London-listed Greatland Gold has indicated that it is considering the option of a dual listing on the Australian sharemarket. The company’s shares rallied after it announced that a drilling program in Western Australia’s Paterson Range had intercepted high-grade gold and copper mineralisation. MD Gervaise Heddle says Australian investors have a greater appreciation of the local mining sector than their British counterparts, so it could make sense to make it easier for Australians to buy Greatland’s stock.

The mining sector’s interest in the Paterson Range region of Western Australia has increased in the wake of speculation of a major copper find by Rio Tinto. Although Rio Tinto has yet to comment, it has established a mining camp in the region and taken up a number of exploration leases. WA Mines Minister Bill Johnston says he has had no talks with Rio Tinto with regard to its presence in the Paterson Range. Fortescue Metals Group, Metalicity and Carawine Resources are among the companies to have acquired mining leases in the region in the wake of the Rio Tinto speculation.

Rio Tinto has declined to confirm or deny reports that it has established an exploration camp in the Pilbara’s North Paterson province. Satellite photos suggest that the resources giant has set up a camp in the province’s sand dunes, which in turn has prompted speculation of a major copper find. The northern part of the province is largely unexplored due to the presence of sand, but the southern region includes the Telfer gold mine and the Woodie Woodie manganese mine.

Artemis Resources intends to drill a hole to a depth of more than 3,300 metres below the surface at its tenement in the Pilbara. The super-deep hole is aimed at gaining more knowledge of the source of the small gold nuggets that have been found near the surface in the Pilbara. Artemis chairman David Lenigas says the junior explorer has had persistent approaches from a major North American resources group about deep-hole drilling.

Upwards of 20 ASX-listed companies are looking for gold in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. They are being buoyed by comparisons being made between the discoveries made to date there and the Witwatersrand formation in South Africa; the latter region has produced half the world’s gold to date. Some of the more prominent companies involved in the "Pilbara gold rush" include Artermis Resources, De Grey Mining and Calidus Resources. The last named company’s activities in the region include the exploration of two leases held by Haoma Mining, with an option to acquire them.

Growing global demand for lithium has prompted pure-play iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group to diversify by revealing plans to explore tenements near existing lithium deposits in Western Australia. Shares in Australian-listed lithium miners have rallied in recent months, amid rising demand for electric cars and plans by some car makers to phase out traditional petrol-only vehicles. Meanwhile, Richard Coppleson of Bell Potter says lithium could follow the same price trajectory as iron ore in the mid-2000s.

Sandfire rolls the dice on growth

The mine life of Sandfire Resources’ DeGrussa copper project in Western Australia will be extended until 2022 when it begins processing ore from the Monty deposit. However, Paul Howard of Hartleys estimates that Sandfire will need to make another significant discovery within 12 months due to the time it takes to begin production. Sandfire CEO Karl Simich has indicated that in addition to further exploration, the miner may be prepared to buy assets that do not usually meet its criteria in order to maintain production.

Goshawk Energy and a company owned by Fortescue Metals Group founder Andrew Forrest have applied for oil and gas exploration permits covering about 220,000 square kilometres in Western Australia’s onshore Canning Basin. Forrest has applied for the permits via Squadron Energy, which is a subsidiary of Minderoo. A spokeswoman for Minderoo says the company is not currently considering the use of fracking in the Canning Basin, but environmental groups have urged Forrest to rule out using the technology.
