Abbott supported as Liberal Leader by only 13% and Shorten as ALP Leader by only 12%

A telephone Morgan Poll has found that 13 per cent of Australian electors prefer Prime Minister Tony Abbott as Liberal Leader, an increase of one per cent. However, Malcolm Turnbull is preferred by 44 per cent of electors (an increase of six per cent). The poll, which was carried out from 20-22 July 2015, also shows that the number of electors who prefer Opposition Leader Bill Shorten as Australian Labor Party Leader has fallen by nine per cent to 12 per cent. In contrast, 26 per cent of electors prefer Deputy Labor Leader Tanya Plibersek (up three per cent).

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by 2.5 per cent to 49 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 4-5 and 11-12 July 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has risen by 2.5 per cent to 41.5 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen by eight points to 90.5 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan notes that support for the Australian Labor Party has fallen after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten fronted the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance & Corruption to answer questions about his conduct while at the Australian Workers Union immediately before his election to Federal Parliament in 2007.

Shorten’s popularity plummets

Support for the federal Australian Labor Party on a two-party preferred basis is steady at 53 per cent in the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll, compared with 47 per cent for the Coalition. However, the approval rating of Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has fallen by six points to 35 per cent, while Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s approval rating is down four points at 36 per cent. Meanwhile, 43 per cent of respondents have nominated Shorten as preferred prime minister, ahead of Abbott with 39 per cent.

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by one per cent to 46.5 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 20-21 and 27-28 June 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has risen by 1.5 per cent to 39 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating is unchanged at 98.5 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan notes that support for the Australian Labor Party has fallen after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten admitted to lying about his support for former prime minister Julia Gillard just before she was deposed two years ago.

Feeling unsafe joins economic fears: poll

The Lowy Institute for International Policy has released the findings of an opinion poll on issues such as national security and the Australian economy. Some 89 per cent of respondents identified Islamic State as the greatest security threat in the next 10 years. Meanwhile, 43 per cent expect solar power to be the nation’s main source of electricity within a decade. The proportion of respondents who are upbeat about the economic outlook has fallen from 86 per cent in 2009-10 to just 63 per cent.

Coalition’s budget gain disappears

Labor’s primary vote has increased by two per cent to 37 per cent, while the Coalition’s primary vote is down three per cent at 40 per cent. Meanwhile, the approval rating of Prime Minister Tony Abbott is down two per cent at 40 per cent, while the rating of Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is steady at 41 per cent.

The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 23-24 and 30-31 May 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has risen by 0.5 per cent to 41 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen by 0.5 points to 100 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the only way for the Government to counter the slowing Australian economy is to undertake comprehensive reforms to increase productivity and "free-up" the labour market.

A special SMS Morgan Poll on State voting intention has found that support for the ruling New South Wales Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by four per cent to 58.5 per cent since April 2015. The poll, which was carried out from 22-24 May, also shows that Premier Mike Baird’s rating as "Better Premier" has risen by 2.5 per cent to 70.5 per cent. In Victoria, support for the Australian Labor Party Government on a two-party preferred basis has risen by 2.5 per cent to 56.5 per cent, while Daniel Andrews’ rating as "Better Premier" has risen by 3.5 per cent to 68 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Coalition’s primary vote has increased from 39 per cent to 43 per cent in the wake of the May 2015 Budget. The personal approval rating of Prime Minister Tony Abbott has risen by eight per cent to 42 per cent, and his rating as preferred prime minister is up six points at 44 per cent.
