Roy Morgan’s latest research shows an increase in trust in the Indonesian Government since new President Prabowo’s inauguration in October 2024. For the first six months of Prabowo’s Presidency, a majority of 69% of Indonesians say they trust the current government, up 8% points from the 61% recorded for the six months before the inauguration. This rise in trust is mirrored by a sharp increase in the approval of government performance. A large majority of 79% of Indonesians agree that "the government is doing a good job running the country", up 7% points compared to the prior six months before President Prabowo came to power. While trust and approval of government performance have risen, concern about corruption remains widespread. In the first six months of the new presidency, 84% of Indonesians agreed that "corruption is one of the major problems facing this country", up 3% points since before Prabowo’s inauguration.

Roy Morgan’s latest research reveals a reshuffling of Indonesians’ priorities over the past decade, amid economic expansion, bold reforms, and escalating household challenges. A representative cross-section of Indonesians aged 17+ were interviewed by Roy Morgan between October 2014 and March 2015 (15,204 interviews) and from October 2024 to March 2025 (5,499 interviews); they were asked "Which three issues are the most important to you". ‘Keeping day-to-day living costs down’ leads the national agenda in 2025, with 44% of Indonesians citing it as one of their top three most important issues (up 10% points from 34% in 2014-15). ‘Fighting corruption’ remains a top priority, holding steady at 41% of Indonesians, the same as a decade ago. Concern about ‘Reducing unemployment’ has risen from 24% to 31% over the last decade, and the share of Indonesians mentioning ‘Fair workplace and employment regulations’ as an important issue has risen from 7% to 10%. Meawhile, concern about ‘managing the economy’ has increased from 25% to 31%. However, Indonesians’ attitudes toward ‘poverty eradication’ have remained remarkably stable, with concern about this issue rising marginally from 29% to 30%.

Prabowo wins Indonesian Presidency as surge in support shown by Roy Morgan continued to grow until election day

The final Roy Morgan Poll on the Indonesian Presidential Election showed support continuing to grow for Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto early in 2024. Subianto won an estimated 57% of the vote in Wednesday’s vote, ahead of runner-up Anies Baswedan on 25% and third-placed Ganjar Pranowo on 17%. The Roy Morgan Poll for September quarter 2023 showed Prabowo with 30% support and in second place. The next Roy Morgan Poll showed Prabowo’s support increasing rapidly, by 13% points, to 43% in December, after Prabowo recruited incumbent President Joko Widodo’s son Gibran Rakabuming to be his vice-presidential running mate in late October. The surge in support for Prabowo, after recruiting Gibran, continued in 2024 with Prabowo’s support increasing another 3% to 46% in January and then another 11% points to 57% on election day – almost doubling Prabowo’s support since September. The Roy Morgan Polls for December 2023 and January 2024 picked up this surge in support for Prabowo and we remarked that ‘Prabowo (was) closing in on a first-round victory in the Presidential election’ – which proved to be correct. The surge in support for Prabowo during the final months of the Indonesian Presidential election campaign mirrors what happened in the 2019 Australian Federal Election. The ALP enjoyed a consistent lead in Roy Morgan polling between 2016 and 2019. However, as the 2019 Federal Election campaign began, the Coalition began to increase their support and close the gap. This trend continued throughout the campaign and the Coalition managed to retain government and win a narrow majority of one seat on election day as their support continued to increase.
