The Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll for December 2023 shows new Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) with a majority of 51.5% (down 6.5% from November) in their first month since being sworn in on November 27, 2023). Support for National was down 1.5% to 36%, while support for ACT dropped 3% points to 9.5% and support for NZ First was down 2% points to 6%. In December support for the defeated Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition was at 42.5%, up 6.5% points from November. Support for Labour increased 1% point to 22%, while support for the Greens surged 3% points to 15.5% (the highest support for the Greens since October 2022) and support for the Maori Party was up 2.5% points to 5%. The survey results for December would lead to 66 seats (down eight seats) being won by the current National/ ACT/ NZ First governing coalition, compared to only 56 seats (up eight seats) for the Labour/ Greens/ Maori Party Opposition. The Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll for November 2023 shows new Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) with a majority of 58% support for November, up 5.2% points from the mid-October election. Support for National was virtually unchanged at 37.5%, down 0.6% points from the election, while support for ACT increased 3.9% points to 12.5% and support for NZ First was up 1.9% points to 8%. In November support for the defeated Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition was at only 36%, down 5.6% points from the election. Support for Labour dropped 5.9% points to 21% (the lowest ever recorded in a Roy Morgan Poll). However, support for the Greens increased 0.9% points to 12.5% while support for the Maori Party was down 0.6% points to 2.5%. The survey results for November would lead to 74 seats (up six seats) being won by the governing coalition, compared to only 48 seats (down seven seats) for the Labour/ Greens/ Maori Party Opposition. Support for Labour was down 4.5% points to 26% (the lowest level of support for Labour so far this year), while support for the Greens fell 0.5% points to 9% (the lowest support for the party since August 2022). Support for the National Party rose 3.5% points to 33.5%, while support for Act NZ was down 1% point to 14%. Support for a right-leaning potential National/Act NZ coalition was up 2.5% points at 47.5% in July. The results for July show further increases in support for minor parties outside the ‘big four’, up 2.5% points to 17.5% in total. Support for Labour was down 0.5% points to 30.5%, while support for the Greens fell 2.5% points to 9.5% (the lowest support for the party since August 2022). Support for the National Party was down 1.5% points to 30% (the lowest level of support since Christopher Luxon became National leader in November 2021), while support for Act NZ was up 1.5% point to 15%. Support for a right-leaning potential National/Act NZ coalition was unchanged at 45% in June. The results for June suggest that neither Labour/Greens nor National/Act NZ will have enough support to form a majority Government later this year and the party in the box seat to determine the next Government is the Maori Party, with support surging 2.5% points to a record high of 7% in June. The latest Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll shows that support for the Labour/Greens coalition government rose to 42% in January 2023 (up 3.5% points on December 2022). Support for Labour was up 2.5% points to 30%, even before former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced her intention to resign on 19 January. Support for the Greens was up 1% point to 12%. In contrast, the main Opposition National Party lost support in January, down 3% points to 32% and support for Act NZ was down by 1% point to 13.5%. Combined support for a potential National/Act NZ coalition is down 4% points to 45.5%, the lowest combined support since October 2022. The results for January suggest that neither Labour/Greens nor National/Act NZ will have enough support to form a majority Government later this year due to increasing support for both the Maori Party and New Zealand First, which are set to hold the ‘balance of power’ on current results. This latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a New Zealand-wide cross-section of 948 electors during January. The latest Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll shows that support for the Labour/Greens coalition government was on 38.5% in December, down 19.4% points since the 2020 election. Support for Labour has fallen by 22.5% to 27.5% since the election in October 2020. Meanwhile, support for a potential National/Act NZ coalition government has risen by 16.3% points to 49.5% since the election. Support for the main opposition National Party is up 9.4% points to 35% and support for Act NZ has increased by 6.9% points to 14.5%. Support for the Maori Party has increased by 2.8% points to 4% since the election. In addition, 8% of electors support minor parties outside Parliament, an increase of 0.3% points since the 2020 election. If these results were repeated at this year’s election the National/Act NZ coalition would likely secure 65 seats in the new Parliament compared to 50 seats for Labour/Greens and a further five seats for the Maori Party. Meanwhile, support for a potential National/Act NZ coalition government fell 4% points to 44.5%. Support for the National Party was down 4% points to 32%, while support for fellow right-leaning party Act NZ was unchanged at 12.5%. Support for the Maori Party fell 0.5% points to 3%, although the party remains the best placed of the minor parties to hold the balance of power in a new Parliament.
