Facebook says it doesn’t need news stories for its business and won’t pay to share them in Australia

Social media company Facebook has rejected a proposal to share its advertising revenue with news publishers. The mandatory code of conduct being developed by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission would govern the relationship between media companies and digital platforms such as Facebook and Google. Facebook claims that there would be no significant impact to its income if it stopped sharing news content, while it says the revenue-sharing proposal means it would be subsidising a competitor.

Battle of the books: MUP loses its spine

A change in Melbourne University Publishing’s editorial policy has prompted the resignation of long-serving CEO Louise Adler and five independent directors of the venerable publishing house. The University of Melbourne’s vice-­chancellor Duncan Maskell has ordered MUP to exit trade publishing and focus exclusively on academic publishing. Several of the directors who resigned have questioned whether MUP will be viable under its new business model, noting the limited market in Australia for academic works.

Blogger Freedman puts Mamamia up for sale

KPMG has been commissioned to find a buyer for the Mamamia Women’s Network, with a deal likely to be concluded in early 2017. The company was founded by former magazine editor Mia Freedman and is best known for publishing the Mamamia.com.au blog. Freedman opted to sell the business after being approached about a potential deal by an offshore party.
