The Queensland Government has set a target date of 2050 for the state to become carbon neutral. As part of this strategy, the Government wants the state’s carbon emissions to be 30 per cent lower than 2005 levels by 2030. It has previously set a target date of 2030 for renewable energy to comprise 50 per cent of the state’s electric power generation by 2030, compared with just seven per cent at present.

The Queensland Resources Council says the State Government should reconsider its policy of lifting renewable sources’ share of power generation from just seven per cent to 50 per cent by 2030. It argues that the focus should be on setting an appropriate target for renewables which ensures that there is no rise in electricity prices for retail customers. The QRC has also raised doubts about the number of jobs that the renewable energy industry is likely to generate.

The Carmichael coal and rail project had received initial approval from the Queensland and Federal Governments, but the funding for the project has not yet been arranged. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has requested the Federal Government to provide Adani with a loan of up to $A1 billion from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund. The Australian Labor Party says the private project should not be subsidised with public funds.

One Nation won 11 seats in the 1998 election in Queensland, and the party aims to field candidates in at least 60 seats at the next state poll. The party’s state and national secretary, Jim Savage, stresses that One Nation will only contest seats if it can field goods candidate, and he says it has held talks with some former Liberal-National Party MPs who lost their seats at the last election. However, he adds that no sitting L-NP MPs have been approached about defecting.

New Hope Coal has warned that the Queensland Government’s proposed new water licence regime for existing resources projects will affect the timetable for the expansion of its Acland mine. MD Shane Stephan has told state MPs that the company will have to begin laying off workers at the mine in 2017 if the legislation is passed. The Queensland Resources Council has criticised the proposed legislation, which would subject resources projects to an additional environmental approval process in order to obtain a water licence.

The privatisation of public assets was a key issue in the last two Queensland elections, and Treasurer Curtis Pitt has indicated that asset sales are not on the government’s agenda. However, Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls has flagged the possible sale of assets such as ports if the Liberal-National Party wins the next state election. Peter Simpson of the Electrical Trades Union has warned that the union movement will revive an anti-privatisation campaign if the LNP again seeks to sell public assets.

Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt says the State Government will achieve an operating surplus in the next four years. However, the July 2015 Budget will include a $A2.988bn write-down of mining royalties over four years, due primarily to the slump in global coal prices. Pitt notes that state revenue will be bolstered by Queensland’s booming residential property market, and says the first-home owners grant will be retained in 2015-16.

The final SMS Queensland State Morgan Poll conducted in mid-January 2015 showed the Liberal-National Party (50.5 per cent) with a slight two-party preferred advantage over the Australian Labor Party (49.5 per cent). This was the closest result of all major polls conducted for the state election. The Galaxy, Newspoll and ReachTEL polls conducted in the last week all predicted a clear LNP majority of 52 per cent per cent, compared with 48 per cent for the ALP. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the SMS State Morgan Polls correctly predicted the close election results in Victoria in 2014 and Queensland in 2015
