Victorian is seeking to generate 2GW of electricity from offshore wind by 2032 and as much as 9GW by 2040, as part of its renewable energy target of 95 per cent by 2035. The state government has announced that it is on track for its first offshore wind auction in 2025, while Victorian Energy Minister Lily’Ambrosio has stated that federal government funding is essential to Victoria’s goal of an offshore wind industry. However, energy market expert David Leitch does not think Victoria is the ideal location for renewable energy, and that it may need to become a net importer of renewable energy that has been generated in other states.

Victoria has announced the results of its first renewable energy tender, with the Andrews government easily reaching its 650 megawatt target. The tender attracted a total of 928MW, with six wind and solar projects being successful. Brett Wickham, the MD of Acciona Energy, whose 158MW Mortlake South Wind Farm was one of the successful projects, says it is currently focusing on just Victoria and Queensland at the moment, due to the current uncertainty regarding energy policy in Canberra.

New figures show that the average wholesale spot energy price in South Australia has risen to nearly $A170 in January 2018, compared with $A84 during the same period in 2017. The average spot price in Victoria has risen from just $A62 to $A139 over the last 12 months. Energy experts warn that more power blackouts and electricity price hikes can be expected due to the state governments’ focus on renewable energy targets rather than ensuring a reliable baseload energy supply.
