Republic director’s fairytale grievance

The Australian Republic Movement says that many people will have been pleased to see someone born in Tasmania become Queen of Denmark, but that it was a pity she had leave Australia to become a head of state. The ARM says that under a republic Mary could become an Australian head of state, while it labelled the accession of Queen Mary and King Frederik to the Danish throne as the "stuff of medieval fairytales". The ARM also claims that monarchies such as the Danish and British ones are becoming under question at a time when the average person is struggling to deal with the cost of living, while their representatives are leading a life of luxury.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s talk of holding a postal ballot to decide how a future head of Australia might be decided does not have the support of Coalition MPs. Liberal MP Craig Kelly wants to see the government focus on issues such as energy prices in 2018, while Ian Goodenough says any talk of a republic "was a distraction". Acting Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek described Turnbull’s postal ballot suggestion as a "thought bubble"

Turnbull blocks republic push

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says there are more urgent issues for Australia to address than whether the nation should become a republic. Although Turnbull himself is firmly in favour of a republic, he warns that pushing the issue too soon could result in another failed referendum on the question of ditching the monarchy. Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett supports Australia becoming a republic, but believes that the nation should wait for the 25th anniversary of the 1999 referendum on the issue before holding another one.
