Senate economics committee chairman Sam Dastyari has questioned whether the BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto offshore marketing hubs are affecting the Western Australian Government’s revenue from iron ore royalties. He says Premier Colin Barnett should look into the issue, especially given that the Australian Taxation Office is also undertaking an investigation into the practice of using trading hubs in Singapore.

WA braces for housing slump

The Western Australian Government’s revenue from property-related taxes is forecast to be between $A2.6bn and $A2.9bn annually over the next four years. However, slowing sales of residential properties may adversely affect state revenue, and Hegney Property Group’s Gavin Hegney expects house prices to fall by 1-2 per cent in 2015. Demand for housing is expected to fall as population growth slows.

The Western Australian (WA) Government has indicated that the funding of infrastructure projects will be affected by the decline in the iron ore price, which has fallen below $US80 per tonne. Treasurer Mike Nahan says the downturn has reduced the state’s revenue by at least $A1.5bn.
