Opposition leader Peter Dutton has urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to convene a meeting of the national cabinet to address the growing problem of anti-Semitism and extremism. Dutton has also committed to introducing a minimum mandatory sentence of six years for terrorism offences and 1-5 years for displaying Nazi symbols and those of prohibited terrorist organisations. However, Law Council of Australia president Juliana Warner and Australian Lawyers Alliance spokesman Greg Barns have criticised Dutton’s push for mandatory sentencing for such crimes.

Defence whistleblower David McBride will spend a minimum of 27 months in prison for providing classified military documents to journalists. The ACT Supreme Court has sentenced McBride to five years and eight months in jail, and he will be eligible for parole in August 2026. Justice David Mossop said the former military lawyer’s actions were a "gross breach of trust" of his position in the Australian Defence Force, and others must be deterred from engaging in similar conduct. The leaked documents were subsequently used as the basis for a series of media reports on Australian solders’ alleged war crimes in Afghanistan.

Victims of institutional child sexual abuse say Cardinal George Pell’s jail sentence is insufficient. The County Court of Victoria’s Chief Judge Peter Kidd has ruled that Pell will be eligible for parole in three years and eight months, after announcing a maximum sentence of six years for sexually abusing two choirboys in 1996 and 1997. Chief Judge Kidd acknowledged that the 77-year-old could die in prison, given his age and health problems. Corrections Victoria has warned that Pell’s high profile and the nature of his offences means he may be targeted by other inmates.
