Former NSW Labor minister Ian McDonald has been sentenced to at least five years and three months in jail for his role in a coal mine licencing conspiracy. Fellow minister Eddie Obeid was given a sentence of at least three years and 10 months, while his son Moses will serve at least three years in prison. The Obeids netted at least $30 million from the conspiracy, while the Independent Commission Against Corruption’s investigation of the mine licencing deal prompted counsel assisting the inquiry, Geoffrey Watson SC, to describe it as the worst example of political corruption since the days of the Rum Corps. Eddie Obeid was been released on bail after his lawyers argued that he was at risk of contracting COVID-19 in custody.

Plutus fraudster seeking happiness gets jail

Plutus Payroll’s former general manager Joshua Kitson will be eligible for parole in three years, after being jailed for his role in a $105m tax fraud. His 4.5-year sentence in the Supreme Court of New South Wales is the first to be handed down as a result of the massive fraud. Justice Anthony Payne ruled that although Kitson was not one of the main instigator’s of the fraud, he had played an integral role and described him as an "essential facilitator".

Barbieri jailed 26 years for killing police inspector

Supreme Court of New South Wales (NSW) judge Robert Allan Hulme has sentenced Mitchell Barbieri to 35 years’ imprisonment, with eligibility for parole after 26 years. Barbieri was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter after initially having been charged with murder over the stabbing death of NSW police officer Bryson Anderson in late 2012. The perpetrator’s mother, Fiona Barbieri, has also received a jail term of 10 years with a minimum of seven years and six months for her role in the attack

ASIC win as adviser jailed for six years

A financial adviser received a jail term of six years and two months in the New South Wales District Court on 30 June 2014. Brian Veitch pleaded to guilty to 22 charges including fraud. He siphoned $A500,000 from client accounts while a financial adviser at WealthSure between 2005 and 2010. On 1 July, the Federal Government will introduce to the Senate its changes to the Future of Financial Advice laws
