Killer behind bars for 10 years

A 42-year-old man has been given a 10-year jail term after being convicted of manslaughter in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Bradley Harvey had previously been charged with the murder of his 29-year-old former girlfriend, but he was acquitted earlier in 2014. He will be eligible parole in 2020

‘Head in bag’ killer appeals

Lawyers for a 28-year-man have launched an appeal against his murder conviction and the length of his sentence. Aaron Carlino was given a minimum sentence of 23 years after being found guilty of killing and dismembering Stephen Cookson. The appeal will be based on the claim that Carlino experienced a version of "battered woman syndrome" after being subjected to bullying and threats of violence by his late employer

Sentences not lenient: Chief Justice

Western Australia’s Chief Justice Wayne Martin says there is a perception among the general public that judges in Australia are too soft on crime and impose lenient sentences, which in turn is leading to higher crime rates. However, he has told a conference in Singapore that courts in all Australian jurisdictions are in fact imposing harsher sentences, with the result that crime rates are falling. He noted that the state’s appeal courts are handing down tougher sentences for crimes such as glassing and manslaughter
