When equities become volatile, investors turn their attention to property which may not now produce attractive returns but at least offers a higher degree of safety. DEXUS Property Group CEO Darren Steinberg stresses "a really consistent performance" of Australian-listed real estate investment trusts (REITs). The REIT sector fell only 0.3 per cent over the last three months, compared with a decline of 5.9 per cent in the S&P/ASX 200 over the same period.

ASX bounces back as buyers return to banks

The Australian sharemarket closed higher on 10 August 2015. The S&P/ASX 200 index climbed 0.6 per cent to 5,509.2 points, while the All Ordinaries gained 0.6 per cent to 5,504.9. The big four banks regained some of their recent losses, with shares in the ANZ Bank rising 1.5 per cent to $A30.60 and Commonwealth Bank closing up one per cent at $A82.14.

Quickflix shares halted amid buy fervour

Shares in Quickflix were suspended from trading at $A0.002 on 30 July 2015, ahead of an announcement on a possible deal with an offshore group. Quickflix did not specify whether it is the potential target or the acquirer, but the trading halt has prompted speculation that the video-on-demand and DVD rental group will be taken over. It is estimated that Australia’s streaming video industry boasts about two million subscribers.

Atlas Iron shares slide after return to trading

More than 266 million Atlas Iron shares changed hands on 27 July 2015, after the stock traded for the first time since April. The iron ore producer’s shares closed at $A0.036 after reaching an intra-day low of $A0.031, and Matthew Keane of Argonaut believes that the stock could fall further Atlas shares were placed in a trading halt at $A0.12 in April, and the latest slump has reduced its market capitalisation to just $A95.9m.

Large caps shine in under-loved index

Analysis by Morningstar shows that the Australian sharemarket is currently trading at a price/earnings ratio of 15.5. The market’s earnings yield is 6.5 per cent, while the yield on 10-year bonds is around three per cent. Morningstar believes that the local sharemarket still offers value, and it favours large-capitalisation stocks such as National Australia Bank, BHP Billiton, Veda Group, Santos and Goodman Group.

Primary Health scare on profit slump

Shares in Primary Health Care fell by $A0.42 to $A4.77 on 16 July 2015, after the group advised that its 2014-15 EBITDA will around $A400m, which is similar to the previous year. Primary had previously forecast that its EBITDA would be within the range of $A410m to $A425m. Primary has also indicated that it now expects a tax refund of about $A50m, compared with earlier expectations of $A130m.

Perpetual takes $1.6 billion hit

Listed wealth manager Perpetual has advised that its funds under management fell from $A34.7bn to $A30.2bn in the June 2015 quarter. Equities accounted for the bulk of the $A1.6bn worth of net outflows for the quarter. The group had reported net inflows for each of the previous seven quarters. CEO Geoff Lloyd has refuted suggestions that the rise in outflows is linked to the resignation of Matt Williams as head of equities. Perpetual shares closed 6.6 per cent lower at $A45.60 on 15 July.

Bell Financial Group rings in strong first half

Australian-listed Bell Financial Group has posted an $A8m consolidated unaudited profit for the first six months of 2015. This was 300 per cent higher than its result for the same period in 2014. Group revenue was 18 per cent higher, with equity capital markets and equities execution revenue up 37 per cent and 16 per cent respectively. The group’s shares closed 11.6 per cent higher at $A0.48 on 9 July.

Iron ore price slump hits mining majors

The iron ore price’s fall to $US54 per tonne weighed heavily on Australian-listed producers of the steel input on 6 July 2015. Rio Tinto shed 2.57 per cent to close at $A51.16 and Fortescue Metals Group was down 5.7 per cent at a six-year low of $A1.71. Their break-even prices are estimated to be around $US32 and $US39 per tonne respectively.

Late rally ends dismal three months for ASX

The Australian sharemarket posted solid gains on 30 June 2015, with the S&P/ASX 200 adding 36 points to close at 5,459. Newcrest Mining was down 0.8 per cent at $A13.02 and Slater & Gordon was five per cent lower. However, the Commonwealth Bank advanced 0.5 per cent to end the session at $A85.15 and Kathmandu Holdings rose by 25.6 per cent to finish at $A1.57 in response to a takeover bid. The S&P/ASX 200 fell by 4.8 per cent in June and 7.3 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2014-15.
