Australian retailers note that shipping costs have tripled in the last 12-15 months, and they will inevitably have to pass some of these costs on to consumers. The cost of shipping goods from China has surged since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, while The Reject Shop’s CEO Andre Reich says spot shipping rates have blown out to about $2,500; this compares with $US450 to $US500 for contracted rates. Some retailers have indicated that they intend to absorb the increased freight costs.

Mining giant Glencore wants Australia’s National Competition Council to take action over a rise in shipping fees at the Port of Newcastle. Glencore is pushing for the port to be "declared" under competition laws. There have also been demands for the Port of Melbourne to be regulated.

Original article by Andrew Burrell
The Australian – Page: 22 : 2-Jul-14

Federal Court judge Lindsay Foster has rejected an appeal against an Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) ruling, sought by Seven West Media. ACMA had sided with offshore services provider Mermaid Marine, after that firm lodged a complaint about Seven Network. The free-to-air TV group’s "Sunday Night" had accused the captain of a Mermaid vessel of "murder and cowardice", when he decided conditions were too severe to come to the aid of another ship in the Gulf of Mexico
