Lowys accept $33bn takeover

Paris-based Unibail-Rodamco will own a portfolio of 104 shopping centres worldwide after striking a deal to acquire Westfield Corporation for $US24.7bn ($A32.76bn). The deal comprises Westfield’s 35 shopping centres in the US and the UK, but it does not include Westfield-brand shopping centres in Australia, which are owned by the separately-listed Scentre Group. Unibail-Rodamco intends to rebadge its existing portfolio of shopping centres with the Westfield brand.

Westfield Corp will still call Australia home

US-focused Westfield Corporation has ruled out shifting its primary listing from the Australian sharemarket to the US, although the group will consider a dual-listed structure. Chairman Frank Lowy says the board decided that there would be minimal benefit from relocating Westfield’s primary listing at present, and said he does not intend to retire from the board. Meanwhile, Westfield has advised that specialty retail sales at its shopping centres rose by 4.4 per cent in the year to March 2016.

Westfield posts US$2.3bn net profit in first full year

Australian-listed Westfield Corporation has posted a net profit of $US2.3bn ($A3.2bn) for calendar 2015. The real estate investment trust was created in 2014 via a restructuring of the Westfield Group. The US and Europe-focused Westfield has reported funds from operations of $US783.4m for 2015, which equates to $A0.377 per security.

Lowy to tap into shop-top living

Westfield Corporation intends to build apartments above or near its shopping centres. Steven Lowy, co-CEO of the Australian-listed group, said Westfield has received approval to build more than 3,000 apartments at its Westfield London, Stratford City and Croydon shopping centres in the UK. It has also gained approval for more than 300 apartments in San Diego.
