Travis Tyler from neobank 86 400 suggests the pandemic has had a bigger impact on the future of banking than the banking royal commission. He notes hygiene concerns have prompted an increase in the number of people using digital wallets in preference to traditional wallets, with financial broker firm Savvy revealing almost 50 per cent of Australians have set up a digital wallet in the past year, while almost half of those people surveyed by Savvy prefer paying with their digital wallet. Marcus Crafter, a developer with digital bank Up, claims that Australians are "never going back to cash".

Google faces court case over misled users

The Australian – Page: 1 & 6 : 30-Oct-19

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission has launched legal action against digital giant Google for misleading users of Android smartphones with regard to the amount of data it collects and how the data would be used. Amongst other things, the ACCC contends that Google failed to inform consumers that it would continue to receive location data from their smartphones if they switched off the ‘location history’ option. Google faces potential fines of up to $10m or 10 per cent of its annual turnover if the alleged breaches of Australian consumer law are proven in the Federal Court.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 21-Dec-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 5.9 million Australian smartphone owners aged 14+ (37 per cent) agree that they would be interested in receiving ads on their mobile phone if it reduced their bill. The survey, which was carried out in the year to September 2016, also shows that 27 per cent of this potential mobile advertising audience is aged 14-24, while 26 per cent is aged 25-34. These are often the hardest audiences to reach (and engage) via traditional media advertising. Meanwhile, among smartphone owners who are receptive to mobile advertising, 56 per cent have not read a print newspaper in the last week and 44 per cent have not looked at a print catalogue; 31% have not even flipped through the latest issue of any magazine, and 24 per cent have not made a single trip to the cinema in the last year. On a normal weekday, 31 per cent do not listen to commercial radio and 14 per cent do not watch commercial TV.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 29-Nov-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 79% of Australia’s 16.2 million smartphone owners use either an Apple iPhone or a Samsung handset. The average Apple iPhone owner is 41 years old and earns $54,000 a year – three years younger but with $7,000 more personal income per year than the average Samsung smartphone owner. Some 54% of iPhone owners are women, while 51 per cent of Samsung owners are men. Meanwhile, compared with Apple users, more Samsung owners rent their home, work in sales, clerical or trades roles (or are retired), shop at discount stores, watch commercial television, go to theatre restaurants, play pokies, work on the car, go fishing, or play sports like cricket, lawn bowls, softball or baseball. On the other hand, Apple users are the more likely of the two groups to have a mortgage, work as managers and professionals (or be students), to go to concerts, live theatre, amusement parks and the beach, to listen to commercial radio, and do yoga or pilates.
