A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 70 per cent of Australians aged 14+ own a smartphone. The survey also shows that 47% of all smartphone owners used their phone to play music during an average week in the year to March 2015, while 45 per cent played games and 31 per cent watched videos. Meanwhile, 74 per cent of Generation Z use their smartphone to play music and 64 per cent play games. Among Generation Y, 58 per cent play music and 52 per cent play games. Some 44 per cent of Generation Xers play games and 40 per cent play music, while 22 per cent of Baby Boomers and 22 per cent of Pre-Boomers use their smartphone to play games.

Mobile banking tipped to wipe 600 branches

A UBS report forecasts that the growing shift to the use of mobile banking services will result in a 5.6 per cent reduction in the number of bank branches globally. Australian bank executives who participated in the UBS survey expect local bank branch numbers to be slashed by 11 per cent in coming years, which would equate to 603 branches. The survey also forecasts that the proportion of banking transactions carried out using mobile technology will rise from 25 per cent to 46 per cent in the next three years.

Over two thirds of Facebook’s users (and over half of YouTube’s) now visiting via mobile devices

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that almost 13 million Australians aged 14+ visited Facebook in an average four weeks in the year to March 2015, which is 10 per cent higher than in the year to March 2013. Some 68 per cent used a mobile device for some or all of their visitation, up from 45 per cent of total visitors two years ago. Meanwhile, the number of Australians who only use a computer to visit Facebook in an average four weeks has fallen from 6,456,000 in 2013 to 4,162,000 in 2015. There has been a similar shift to mobile devices among YouTube visitors in the last two years, although the majority of visitors to eBay still do so using a computer.

All in the wrist? How 2015’s smartwatch intention looks a lot like smartphone intention did in 2008

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the first four months of 2014, shows that 2.7 per cent of Australians aged +14 said they intend to buy a smartwatch in the next year. This is very similar to the 3.6 per cent of Australians who said they intended to buy an iPhone during the first four months after its local release in 2008. The age profile is also markedly similar: around 43 per cent of iPhone intenders between July and October 2008 were aged 14-24, and another 28 per cent were aged 25-34. Among today’s smartwatch intenders, 38 per cent are aged 14-24 and 30 per cent are aged 25-34.

Android leads Apple in smartphone wars

Data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that 53.8 per cent of smartphones that were sold in Australia during the first quarter of 2015 used the Android operating system. In contrast, Apple iOS-based smartphones accounted for 36.8 per cent of sales. Apple had been the market leader in the December 2014 quarter. Android is also the market leader in the US and Europe.

Mobile mums: what do they do on their smartphones?

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 97 per cent of Australian mothers have a mobile phone, while 77 per cent have a smartphone. The survey, which was carried out in the year to December 2014, also shows that mothers are 66 per cent more likely to use their smartphone to enter competitions online than the average Australian aged +14 who owns a smartphone. They are also 54 per cent more likely to read online catalogues in a four-week period. However, they are 47 per cent less likely than the average Australian to download podcasts on their smartphone and 32 per cent less likely to stream video.

Most HTC smartphone owners with Telstra – can Optus or Vodafone claim bigger share of HTC One M9 buyers?

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that almost one million Australians aged 14+ currently have a HTC smartphone as their main mobile phone. The survey, which was carried out in the year to December 2014, also shows that 55 per cent of HTC smartphone owners use the Telstra network, while 18 per cent use Optus and 14 per cent are with Vodafone. Roy Morgan Research’s Tim Martin notes that 28 per cent of HTC owners are over the age of 50, but 65 per cent of current smartphone users who intend to buy a HTC within the next six months are less than 35 years old

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 26.5 per cent of Australians aged 14+ had one or more mobile connections in the six months to September 2014. This compares with 30.7 per cent in the six months to September 2013. The survey also shows that 7.4 per cent of Australians now use a USB modem, down from 10.8 per cent, while the proportion who use tablet SIM cards has fallen from 4.3 per cent to 3.7 per cent. Meanwhile, almost 2.1 million Australians now use their smartphone as a modem in an average four-week period, compared with 1.9 million a year ago

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 81 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who own a smartphone notice some form of outdoor advertising in an average week. The survey, which was carried out in the six months to June 2014, shows that 59 per cent of smartphone users had seen or heard advertising in a shopping centre or mall in the last seven days, while 54 noticed large billboards. However, just 72 per cent of Australians with a non-smart mobile phone noticed some form of outdoor advertising during the week
