A-League soccer strikes record $346m TV deal with Fox

Fox Sports has secured a six-year deal to broadcast the A-League, as well as matches featuring the Socceroos and the Matildas. The pay-TV group will pay $A310m for the broadcasting rights, plus $A36m in contra advertising. The deal is worth about $A58m a year, although Football Federation Australia had been hoping to gain around $A80m a year. FFA has yet to secure a free-to-air broadcaster for soccer matches, but CEO Geoff Gallop says the major networks have expressed interest.

Grassroots game worth $1b to economy

A report produced by Football Federation Australia (FFA) estimates that so-called "grassroots" soccer injects more than $A417m into the New South Wales (NSW) economy each year. FFA CEO David Gallop says this implies that grassroots soccer contributes more than $A1bn to the national economy each year. It is estimated that there are 291,000 registered soccer players in NSW, and more than 365,000 people in the state participate in the sport

More than 560,000 people have attended Asian Cup matches in Australia during January 2015. Each match in the tournament has averaged 20,000 spectators, while matches in which Australia did not play have attracted an average of almost 15,000. The Asian Cup has also generated strong interest abroad, with a record 95 million TV viewers in China watching the semi-final between Australia and China
