Facebook’s chief marketing officer Antonio Lucio has conceded that it will take years for the social media giant to regain the trust of consumers and advertisers in the wake of a series of scandals. He has told the AdWeek conference that trust is built through "very meaningful action" rather than mere words. Meanwhile, Facebook executive Ime Archibong says the company still has much work to do to address some consumer concerns, including how it deals with hate speech.

Social media giant Facebook has outlined plans to directly compete with financial services providers such as banks and the online payments sector. It aims to offer digital wallet and cryptocurrency products in the first half of 2020. Facebook is a founding member of the Libra Association, which will manage the Libra cryptocurrency, while its digital wallet will be called Calibra. Facebook’s plans can be expected to attract close scrutiny from Australian and international regulators, given the company’s data breach scandal in 2018.

US competition lawyer Howard Shelanski has urged caution when it comes to passing laws that would dictate how Facebook and Google should display content or refer users to news websites. Shelanski, who is a partner with law firm Davis Polk and advises Facebook on competition law, contends that Google and Facebook are not publishers. On the question of mergers, Shelanski says there needs to be greater acknowledgement of the value of competition and innovation when regulators are assessing them.

Facebook has advised that it intends to ban "praise, support and representation" for white nationalism and separatism. It will initially focus on removing such content; those who continue to voice such views could find themselves being banned from all Facebook services, including WhatsApp and Instagram. The ban follows continued criticism of social media companies in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings over their failure to deal with the issue of hate speech on their platforms.

However, she has conceded that Facebook cannot completely remove fake news from its platform. Over 90% of Australians lack understanding of how leading apps use data

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 16-Jul-18

Roy Morgan’s privacy survey has found that more than 90% of Australians aged 14+ are either "not sure" or only "somewhat understand" how several leading apps use and/or share their data. This includes 94.6% of Australians who use Apple apps, 94.3% of Twitter users, 94.0% of Instagram users and 93.7% of Snapchat users. The findings are based on interviews with a representative sample of 967 Australians drawn from Roy Morgan’s Single Source panel. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says that despite the concerns raised about the potential misuse of personal data, only a tiny minority of Australians (between 5-10%) believe they "fully understand" how companies such as Apple, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Google use and/or share their personal data.

The search algorithms of digital companies like Google and Facebook are attracting growing scrutiny by regulators such as the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission and the European Commission. However, Google Australia MD Jason Pellegrino has rejected a proposal to establish an algorithm review board, arguing that it would be "unworkable" as Google has multiple algorithms which involve many variables.

Tech giants in abuses of power

The Australian – Page: 1 & 8 : 4-May-18

Many of the submissions to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s inquiry into digital platforms have highlighted the impact of Google and Facebook on jobs and advertising revenue in the media sector. Seven Group CEO Ryan Stokes argued that digital companies should be required to pay a fair price for distributing media content, while Foxtel said it is hard to attract new pay-TV customers when pirated content can be accessed for free on Facebook and YouTube. The Australian Association of National Advertisers called for digital platforms to be regulated in a similar way to traditional media companies.
