Members of the Australian Beverages Council have agreed to pursue a 20 per cent reduction in sugar levels in non-alcoholic drinks by 2025. The move is seen as an attempt by soft drink makers such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola to offset calls for a tax on sugary drinks, although both the federal government and Labor have stated that they are against such a tax. Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has welcomed the agreement, while Greens leader Richard Di Natale claims that soft drink makers are more interested in making profits than in promoting good health.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that fruit juice and drinks, soft drinks, cordial and frozen beverages such as Slushies are all dramatically more popular with Australian children aged 6-13 years than with consumers aged 14 or older. In an average seven days, 62.3% of Australian children drink fruit juice/drinks at least once, 57.8% consume carbonated soft drinks, 32.4% drink cordial and 28.6% consume frozen drinks. Those figures exceed 100% as a substantial proportion of children are drinking more than one of these beverage types per week.

Coca-Cola Amatil’s 2016 interim results are likely to be negatively affected by the use of discounting to drive sales of carbonated soft drinks and bottled water. Analysts expect the company to announce weaker earnings for the half-year. Consumers’ preferences are changing. Figures from Retail World show that soft drink sales declined from 57.5 per cent of non-alcoholic beverages in 2008 to 50.5 per cent in 2015. Meanwhile, consumption of bottled water has increased from 10.4 per cent to 20.4 per cent.

Coca-Cola Australia’s Sarah Prestwood says consumers have responded positively to the new Coke Life softdrink, and sales to date have exceeded expectations. However, Credit Suisse believes that Coke Life’s sales during its first five weeks on the Australian market were well below those of Coke Zero and Coke Vanilla upon their initial launch. The firm has a 12-month share price target of $A10.60 on Coca-Cola Amatil.

Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) will shortly unveil the results of its strategic review, which was undertaken in response to an earnings downgrade earlier in 2014. The review is expected to result in job cuts, the abolition of some products and brands, and a reduction in capital expenditure. CCA is also believed to be planning to launch the low-calorie Coke Life soft drink, and may consider selling a stake in its Indonesian business to the Coca-Cola Company
