New data from Roy Morgan shows that 32% of Australian households (more than 3.3 million) now have some form of solar energy system, such as a solar hot water system, a solar heated swimming pool or rooftop solar panels with or without battery systems. These figures include 27% of households with solar panels and 5% with both solar panels and storage batteries. Western Australians are leading the way in solar panel ownership (37%) along with South Australian households (also 37%), followed by Queensland (33%). Households in these States are more likely to have solar panels than an average Australian household. Meawhile, households in South Australia and the Northern Territory (Darwin and Alice Springs) have a higher take-up of solar batteries (9% and 7% of households, respectively) compared to the national average (5%). While ownership of solar power storage batteries is at a much lower rate compared to solar panels, the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program is set to boost the future take-up of storage batteries nationwide.

Energy prices fall as solar gets hot

Original article by Colin Packham
The Australian – Page: 17 : 23-Oct-23

Data from the Australian Energy Market Operator shows that the amount of electricity generated by solar power reached a record 2,287 megawatts in the September quarter. AEMO has also reported that wholesale spot electricity prices across the National Electricity Market averaged $63/MWh during the quarter, which is 71 per cent lower than the previous corresponding period. Meanwhile, coal-fired power generation fell to a record low in the September quarter, after AGL shut down the Liddell power station in late April.

Australia set for cheaper solar power as supply of panels soars, says report

Original article by Peter Hannam
The Guardian Australia – Page: Online : 14-Jun-23

Think tank Climate Energy Finance notes that a record 268 gigawatts of solar panels was installed globally in 2022. A new report from CEF forecasts that this could reach 1,000GW per annum by 2030, given the pace of solar power uptake. The report also concludes that the cost of installing solar panels is likely to fall significantly, given the rise in production and a downturn in the cost of raw materials such as polysilicon. Renate Egan from the University of New South Wales says Australia could have a competitive advantages in parts of the solar panel supply chain.

Solar already Australia’s largest source of electricity as rooftop capacity hits 20GW, consultancy says

Original article by Peter Hannam
The Guardian Australia – Page: Online : 1-Mar-23

Solar energy consulting firm SunWiz says Australia now boasts the world’s highest penetration of rooftop solar panels, which are now installed on nearly one in every three homes nationwide. Queensland has the highest penetration of solar panels, at 82 per cent, followed by South Australia (78 per cent) and New South Wales (51 per cent). SunWiz’s data shows that rooftop solar capacity now totals 20 gigawatts nationwide. SunWiz estimates that it took about 11 years for the first 10GW of capacity to be installed, while the second 10GW took just four years. Green Energy Markets recently estimated that the next 10GW will take just over three years to be installed.

Solar Energy Systems on households have more than doubled since 2018 – now at nearly a third of all households (32.3%)

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 19-Oct-22

The latest Roy Morgan research shows that over 3.2 million Australian households (32.3% of all households) owned a Solar Energy System in the year to June 2022, up from only 1.32 million (14%) in the year to June 2018. There were big increases in ownership of Solar Energy Systems in 2019 and 2020, although growth has levelled off over the last two years as the penetration of Solar Energy Systems approached one-third of all households. On a State-by-State basis there are more households in NSW (885,000) with Solar Energy Systems than anywhere else followed by Queensland (756,000), Victoria (728,000), WA (439,000) and SA (332,000). SA and WA have the highest rates of Solar Energy System penetration – over 40% of households. The ownership rates are significantly lower in South-Eastern Australia with under a third of households in Tasmania (30.2%), Victoria (27.7%) and New South Wales (26.6%) owning Solar Energy Systems. A primary reason which explains the lower rates of households with Solar Energy Systems in NSW and Victoria is the higher density living and far higher number (and proportion) of apartments, flats, units, semi-detached terraces and townhouses.

Stockland is stacking up solar centres

Original article by Nick Lenaghan
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 33 : 12-Sep-17

Real estate developer Stockland will spend $A23.5 million on the installation of 39,000 solar panels on the roofs of 10 of its shopping centres. The panels will generate 17.2 GWh of electricity each year. Further down the track, MD Mark Steinert hopes that if Stockland can combine its solar panels with battery storage technologies, it could be in a position where it can sell electricity into the national grid.

Solar Electric Panels hot items in Queensland & South Australia

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 5-Jul-17

The latest Roy Morgan research shows almost one in four Australian households (23.2%) own a Home Solar Electric Panel (Year to March 2017). Ownership is strongest in South Australia (32.8%), Queensland (30.2%) and Western Australia (26.6%). However, take-up lags in Australia’s biggest States with only 17.7% of households in New South Wales and 21% of Victorian households owning Home Solar Electric Panels. In the next 12 months only 1% (94,000) of Australian households intend to buy (or replace) their Home Solar Electric Panels.

The Lowy Institute for International Policy has released the findings of an opinion poll on issues such as national security and the Australian economy. Some 89 per cent of respondents identified Islamic State as the greatest security threat in the next 10 years. Meanwhile, 43 per cent expect solar power to be the nation’s main source of electricity within a decade. The proportion of respondents who are upbeat about the economic outlook has fallen from 86 per cent in 2009-10 to just 63 per cent.

Battery storage technology is widely tipped to be the "next big thing" for Australian households. A number of energy groups are banking on future demand for battery storage, with AGL Energy entering the market in May 2015. Red Energy, Ergon Energy and ActewAGL hope to begin selling Panasonic’s new home battery system later in 2015, after they undertake a trial of the technology. Demand for battery storage solutions is expected to be particularly high among households with solar power.
