Department store chain Myer is tipped to offer discounts of up to 70 per cent in its mid-season stocktake sale, which will begin on 29 May. French Connection, Bonds and Country Road are among the brands that will be heavily discounted in the stocktake sale, which has been launched earlier than usual due to an unseasonally warm start to the winter months. Grant Saligari of Credit Suisse notes that other retailers tend to begin discounting when one does so. David Jones is also tipped to launch its mid-season sale ahead of schedule.

The mid-season clearance sales of Australian retailers are expected to benefit from a chilly start to winter across much of the country. The cold weather is likely to boost demand for warm clothing, allowing department stores and specialty retailers to reduce their winter inventory. Myer has commenced its clearance sale more than a week ahead of schedule, and aims to sell about $150m worth of stock, while David Jones is offering big discounts in its mid-year sale.

Data from National Australia Bank suggests that there was a 13.5 per cent increase in consumer spending in the week beginning 22 December 2014. The figures, which are based on credit card and eftpos transactions by the bank’s customers, shows that consumer spending topped $A1.2bn in the week after discretionary retailers introduced price discounts. Craig Woolford of Citigroup says many consumers waited until retailers began discounting before doing their Christmas shopping
