Reuters’ top editor slams AI plunder

Reuters’ editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni delivered the annual Andrew Olle Lecture at the ABC’s Sydney headquarters last night. Galloni used her speech to warn of the impact of artificial intelligence technology on the media industry. She said the industry is facing a new and potentially existential challenge from AI companies that are using copyrighted news content to train their models, with a resulting loss of revenue for media organisations. Galloni added that Reuters’ business model demonstrates that the licensing of news content to third parties can work; however, she said that some licensing conditions must be non-negotiable, including fair payment and attribution of the original source.

King champions AUKUS, NATO in historic speech to US Congress

King Charles III has emphasised the defence, intelligence and security ties between the UK and the US in his address to a joint session of Congress. King Charles noted amongst other things that the two nations are co-operating on the F-35 jet fighter program and the AUKUS submarine alliance; he received a standing ovation from some members of congress when he mentioned AUKUS, of which Australia is also a member. King Charles stressed the importance of the NATO alliance, which has been criticised President Donald Trump since the Iran war began, while he said that he hopes the close ties between Britain and the US will continue. Trump was not present for the King’s speech due to protocol.

Andrews’ great wall of silence

The Victorian government is under scrutiny over revelations that Premier Daniel Andrews addressed a forum in Melbourne on Monday night to which access was restricted to the Chinese media. Andrews has indicated that he has "no idea" why Australian journalists were banned from attending the Post Pandemic China-Australia Economic Co-operation Forum. Opposition leader John Pesutto says it is unacceptable for any political leader to give speeches in secret. Liberal senator James Paterson recently raised concerns that one of the forum’s sponsors is a "front group" for China’s top spy agency.
