The most common question on Wall Street: when will rally end?

Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index has gained four per cent so far in 2017, and it has not ended a month in positive territory since April. Meanwhile, the major US indices have finished in the black every month except for March, and the S&P 500 has gained nearly 15 per cent in the year to date. Wall Street’s sustained rally has prompted speculation as to when it will end, but there are strong indications that the current bull run will extend beyond seven months.

Investor U-turn amid signs the wheels are falling off Trump rally

Original article by Philip Baker

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 18 per cent since the US presidential election in November 2016. However, US investor and hedge fund manager Ray Dalio says the uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration may provide the catalyst for a sharemarket correction. The future of President Donald Trump’s much-touted corporate and personal income tax cuts in particular is uncertain, and a sell-off is likely if the reforms are not passed by Congress.

Wall St record highs stumble on flare-up of North Korea tension

US share price indices have retreated and the Chicago Board Options Exchange’s volatility index has risen by more than 10 per cent in response to the latest war of words between President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un. However, some analysts had previously warned that the low level of the VIX suggested that financial market risk may be set to increase, and DoubleLine Capital’s Jeff Gundlach recently said that market indicators point to a rise in bond yields.

World shrugs off Dow high

Original article by David Rogers

Sharemarkets in Australia and Asia closed lower on 3 August, despite the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching the 22,000-point milestone. The Dow Jones has gained 20 per cent since the US presidential election in November 2016, and much of this can be attributed to a rise in stocks that have exposure to global economic growth. However, the upbeat sentiment on Wall Street has not been reflected by the Dow Jones Transportation Average Index, which has fallen close to its 200-day moving average. A significant divergence between the two indices has often signalled a pullback in the past.

Technology plunge raises fears of meltdown

Original article by John Kehoe

The Nasdaq Composite Index reached a record high on 9 June 2017, before closing down 1.8 per cent amid bearish sentiment toward technology stocks. Shares in Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google parent Alphabet shed 3-5 per cent. The sell-off was prompted by a range of factors, including a report from Goldman Sachs suggesting that many US technology stocks are overvalued. Analysts have downplayed comparisons with the "tech wreck", while Bruce McCain of Key Private Bank says a pullback in the sector was inevitable.

Numbers look good, so where’s the euphoria?

Australian bank and resources stocks rallied on 30 May 2017, allowing the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 to finish in the black after reaching a three-month low early in the session. Meanwhile, Citigroup notes that investor sentiment is not sufficiently high that a market retreat is likely, despite key US indices being at or near record highs. However, the S&P/ASX 200 and the S&P 500 have tended to underperform in the month of June, shedding an average of 2.2 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively over the last 10 years.

Stocks bounce back, buoyed by Trump’s fiscal optimism

The Australian sharemarket posted its largest single-day gain in more than five years on 10 November 2016, while Wall Street defied expectations of a big fall after the election of Donald Trump, finishing in the black. The Australian dollar also rallied, while local and US 10-year bond yields rose. Financial markets have scaled back the odds of a reduction in Australia’s cash rate by mid-2017, while there has been a slight easing of expectations of a rate rise in the US in December 2016.

Clinton victory and divided Congress ‘best for shares’

UBS suggests that in terms the outlook for equities, the best outcome of the US election would be if Hillary Clinton becomes president but neither party has control of Congress. Wingate Asset Management’s Chad Padowitz notes that health stocks in particular could be sold down if the Democrats control both houses. Historical analysis by AMP Capital shows that since 1927, US equities have delivered better returns when a Democrat has been in the White House but one or both houses of Congress have been controlled by the Republican Party.

Small-cap party could end in tears when the next crash comes

Original article by Philip Baker

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained almost 944 per cent since the Black Monday sharemarket crash of October 1987, while the S&P 500 has risen by 854 per cent. In contrast, Australia’s All Ordinaries Index has increased by nearly 245 per cent. However, analysis by Richard Coppleson of Bell Potter suggests that when dividends are taken into account the All Ordinaries Accumulation Index has only slightly underperformed the S&P 500. Meanwhile, Coppleson warns that the current rally in small-cap stocks is unsustainable and a major fallout is inevitable.

The US Federal Reserve has increased the federal funds rate by 25 basis points at its monetary policy meeting in mid-December 2015. It is the first rise in US short-term interest rates since December 2008. Investors will now be seeking guidance from Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen on the likely timing of further rate increases. The move to tighten monetary policy has bolstered Wall Street, while the gold price and the US dollar have also risen.
