ABC MD Michelle Guthrie has defended the public broadcaster’s deal to produce a second series of drama "Glitch" in partnership with Netflix. She has told the Screen Forever conference that ABC viewers now expect drama shows to have the same production values as those produced by subscription video-on-demand services, and notes that producing such content is becoming increasingly expensive. The co-production deal will give Netflix global streaming rights to "Glitch".

An ABC spokesman has defended the public broadcaster’s decision to produce a second series of drama "Glitch" in partnership with Netflix. The US-based subscription video-on-demand provider is believed to be contributing about 15 per cent of the production costs. Netflix will stream the series outside of the Australian market at the same time as it is broadcast by the ABC. The deal has been questioned by Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner and Nine Entertainment Company CEO Hugh Marks.

RegionalTAM data shows that WIN Corporation’s ratings in the 6pm to 7:30pm timeslot have risen since it became a Ten Network affiliate on 1 July 2016. WIN CEO Andrew Lancaster has praised the level of assistance and co-operation provided by Ten during WIN’s switch from its long-running affiliation deal with the Nine Network. The data also show that Southern Cross Media Group’s ratings under its new program supply deal with Nine are lower than WIN’s ratings when it was affiliated with Nine.

ABC MD Michelle Guthrie has told the Crawford Australian Leadership Forum that the public broadcaster must continue to establish alliances with third parties to ensure that its content is accessible on any platform. The ABC has made more of its contents available to Netflix’s Australian subscribers, while some of its programs are also offered by Netflix in the US. Some of the ABC’s content is also available via Netflix’s local rivals, Presto and Stan.

The Nine Network’s content was temporarily unavailable in regional areas of Western Australia after negotiations with West Digital Television regarding an affiliation deal stalled. WDT is a joint venture between WIN Corporation and Prime Media Group, and it had proposed to pay an affiliation fee of less than 20 per cent of its revenue. Nine in turn is believed to have sought a percentage of revenue based on audience share. WDT began broadcasting Nine’s signal nearly two days after the negotiations’ deadline of 30 June had lapsed.

The affiliation agreement with Bruce Gordon’s WIN Corporation may prompt Ten Network to offer a board seat to the billionaire. WIN CEO Andrew Lancaster is expected to become Gordon’s representative on the Ten board. Ten had previously declined to give Gordon board representation due to conflict of interests concerns, as he is a major shareholder in both Ten and Nine Entertainment Company. WIN’s content supply agreement with Ten commences on 1 July 2016.

Media buying agencies have had to cancel some advertising sales deals that were booked prior to the new regional TV affiliation agreements that take effect on 1 July 2016. WIN Corporation and Southern Cross Media Group will switch metropolitan affiliates, which is likely to cause confusion among some viewers and affect media buyers’ ad sales in July. The media landscape is expected to face further changes if cross-media ownership laws are abolished, with the prospect of mergers between metropolitan and regional networks.

WIN Corporation is set to finalise a five-year affiliation deal with the Ten Network, after the regional broadcaster was dumped by Nine Entertainment Company in April 2016. Ten is expected to receive a much lower proportion of WIN’s TV revenue under the content supply deal than the one struck by Southern Cross Media with Nine. Southern Cross and WIN will switch affiliation partners on 1 July 2016, which Dentsu Aegis Network Australia CEO Simon Ryan warns is likely to have a short-term impact on their revenue.
