Air New Zealand doubles down on Houston route

Air New Zealand will face competition on the New Zealand-US route from mid-2016, when American Airlines and United Airlines commence flights on the route. Meanwhile, Air NZ has reduced its capacity on the Auckland-Los Angeles and Auckland-San Francisco routes in response to strong demand for airfares for its recently launched flights between Auckland and Houston. The carrier will offer five flights on the route each week from March.

A2 Milk shuns Asia as shares hit ASX

New Zealand-based The a2 Milk Company has built a significant market share in Australia in the last eight years. The group’s shares will debut on the Australian sharemarket on 31 March 2015, although it has not raised additional capital via the listing. CEO Geoff Babidge has outlined plans for the group to expand into the US and the UK. It will also seek to lift revenue from $NZ110.6m in 2013-14 to $NZ230m by 2015-16

Air NZ ‘adamant’ Virgin stays listed

Air New Zealand (NZ) is Virgin Australia’s largest shareholder, with a 25.99 per cent stake. The carrier, Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways and Virgin Group have a combined stake of 79.4 per cent in Virgin Australia, but Air NZ CFO Rob McDonald has downplayed speculation that they could seek to privatise the airline. He stresses the importance of maintaining a sharemarket listing, while he has ruled out spinning off Air NZ’s frequent flyer program in the near-term
