Nine Entertainment Company has posted a 2017-18 underlying net profit of $156.7m, which is 26.8 per cent higher than previously. Underlying EBITDA was up 25.1 per cent at $257.2m and revenue rose 6.5 per cent to $1.3bn. Nine boasted a 38.6 per cent share of free-to-air metropolitan advertising revenue in 2017-18, ahead of Seven West Media with a 38.1 per cent share. Nine CEO Hugh Marks is upbeat about the media group’s outlook, highlighting its capabilities in delivering content across media platforms and targeted advertising via its addressable TV technology.

Pay TV service Fetch breaks through 700,000 subscribers

FetchTV boasted revenue in excess of $155m in 2017-18m, and the number of transactions on its platform grew by 50 per cent to 2.5 million. Fetch gained around 160,000 subscribers during the financial year, and its customer base now exceeds 700,000. CEO Scott Lorson says Fetch is on track to having one million customers, although it lags well behind Foxtel with 2.8 million subscribers. He notes that Fetch is benefiting from global trends such a growing range of content options and fast broadband with limitless data.

Optus app’s cup woes not demand-related

Optus will continue to pursue deals for live streaming of soccer matches despite the technical problems that marred its coverage of the FIFA World Cup. Optus CEO Allen Lew has attributed the problems with its Optus Sports app to "compatibility issues" rather than the impact of customer demand on its network. He adds that the app has undergone rigorous testing and describes it as "world class". Optus’s net profit after tax fell by 3.5 per cent to $154m in the June quarter, while operating revenue was six per cent higher than previously at $2.2bn.

Fairfax-Nine merger to fight Facebook, Google

Chris Stott of Wilson Asset Management estimates that the proposed $4.2bn merger between Nine Entertainment Company and Fairfax Media will generate cost and revenue synergies of at least $100m. The deal is the first since the changes to cross-media ownership laws, and there is speculation that there will be further consolidation in the sector. Nine Entertainment CEO Hugh Marks will head the new company, which will combine print and broadcasting assets, as well as the Stan streaming video service and a 60 per cent stake in the Domain real estate listings business.

ABC pitches for massive digital grant

The ABC is seeking a one-off funding boost to prepare it for the eventual termination of traditional broadcasting services and its shift to a pure-play online media company. As part of the public broadcaster’s online-only future, it proposes to establish a database containing its entire archive of audio-visual content. ABC chairman Justin Milne notes that it spends about $200m a year on broadcast infrastructure and spectrum, but it will no longer incur these costs when it ultimately shifts to an online-only platform.

Surge in video streaming on NBN

Data from NBN Co shows that video streaming, web browsing and virtual ­private networks account for the bulk of traffic on the national broadband network. The average household with an NBN connection now downloads 200 gigabytes per month, compared with just 70GB per month three years ago. Labor has declined to comment on whether it still intends to roll out fibre-to-the-premises technology nationwide if it wins the next federal election.

Foxtel targets cricket in streaming push

Foxtel is said to be aiming to launch its direct-to-consumer sports streaming video service in early November, to coincide with the start of its cricket coverage. The new service is tipped to have separate branding to distinguish it from other Foxtel products, and is part of the pay-TV group’s push to increase its market penetration. Foxtel’s broadcasting rights deal with Cricket Australia includes exclusive streaming rights.

Calls for Netflix to back local content

Screen Producers Australia has used its submission to the competitive neutrality inquiry into public broadcasting to push for local content quotas to be extended to streaming video providers. It noted that Netflix has a larger library of Australian content on its US platform than it offers to local subscribers. SPA has called for government intervention to ensure that local content producers are not disadvantaged, while it has also urged legislative action to protect content producers against unfair contracts with regard to broadcasting and streaming rights.

Optus lets SBS simulcast rest of World Cup

Optus CEO Allen Lew says the telco is confident that it has resolved the technical issues that plagued its live streaming coverage during the first week of the FIFA World Cup. However, Optus has agreed to allow SBS to broadcast all remaining matches in the tournament, including ones that were initially to have been exclusive to Optus Sport. SBS MD Michael Ebeid notes that the public broadcaster’s World Cup coverage has attracted eight million viewers to date. Meanwhile, Tunisia has won 2-1 against Panama in the latest World Cup match.

SBS will simulcast all remaining matches in the group stages of the FIFA World Cup following the technical issues that have plagued Optus’s live streaming coverage. Optus CEO Allen Lew had previously expressed confidence that the problems had been resolved. However, he has announced that Optus will offer free access to its World Cup coverage until the end of August and paid subscribers will receive a full refund. Optus will also consider compensation requests from advertising partners for its World Cup coverage. Meanwhile, Spain has defeated Iran 1-0 in the latest World Cup match.
