Netflix will provide some financing for the second series of ABC drama "Glitch", but Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner argues that overseas subscription video-on-demand companies should invest more in local film and TV content. In 2012, the Convergence Review recommended the introduction of a "uniform content scheme", while the European Union has proposed minimum local content requirements for SVOD providers.

Netflix ratings fast-tracked in pilot program

US subscription video-on-demand provider Netflix will trial a self-regulation system for the classification of content that it streams in Australia. The pilot program is aimed at overcoming Australia’s often lengthy process for classifying films and TV programs, to ensure that local Netflix customers can view content at the same time as it is made available overseas. The trial will include the use of an online tool that will apply Australian classification ratings to Netflix content.

Second wind lifts Netflix over 5.75 million Australians – but not everyone actually watches it

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 2-Dec-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 29 per cent of Australians aged 14+ (5,776,000 people) had a Netflix subscription in November 2016, up from 25 per cent in May. A total of 2,223,000 Australian households now have a Netflix subscription. Meanwhile, more than two in five Netflix subscribers stream less than three hours of its content during an average week, including 26 per cent who watched some Netflix but less than three hours in the last seven days, and another 16 per cent who did not watch any at all. Some 35 per cent of people with a household Netflix subscription spend three to seven hours watching, and 14 per cent spend eight to 14 hours. Less than one in 10 Netflix subscribers (nine per cent) had a real "binge-viewing" week, watching 15 or more hours of content. Although the overall take-up of Netflix now rivals that of Foxtel, those with the Pay TV provider spend around twice as much time watching. The majority of Foxtel subscribers spend at least eight hours a week watching, including over a third who watch for 15 hours or more. Only around one in 20 people with Foxtel haven not watched it at all in the last seven days.

Seven will not stream the race live on Facebook, although it will provide content for Twitter’s live coverage of the Cup.

Amazon has declined to comment on speculation that its Prime Video subscription video-on-demand service could be launched in Australia in November 2016, to coincide with the global debut of "The Grand Tour". The program is hosted by former "Top Gear" presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Amazon may opt to delay the local launch of its SVOD service until 2017, to enable it to build up a larger range of original and licensed content.

Cheerio to Presto: so how many subscribers are up for grabs – and can Foxtel persuade them to Play?

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 6-Oct-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 1.5 per cent of Australian homes (143,000) subscribed to Presto in the six months to August 2016. Some 77 per cent (or 110,000) of the homes with access to Presto also have at least one other pay TV/SVOD service; 55 per cent of Presto homes also have Netflix and 27 per cent have Stan, while 48 per cent have Foxtel – with almost all of them using the traditional set-top box, not the streaming Foxtel Play. Meanwhile, analysis of SVOD households based on Household Life Stage shows that half of homes with Netflix or Stan are in the Young Singles, Young Couples and Young Parents segments, while the majority of homes that have Foxtel are Mid-Life Households (33 per cent) or Older Households (28 per cent).

Foxtel will discontinue the Presto subscription video-on-demand service by the end of January 2017, after agreeing to buy out joint venture partner Seven West Media. The pay-TV group will focus on its internet-based Foxtel Play service, which will be relaunched with a bigger range of packages and lower prices. Foxtel Play will be pitched at consumers who want access to premium content but are reluctant to take out a Foxtel broadcast TV subscription.

Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh has confirmed that the pay-TV group’s next-generation set-top box will allow customers to access subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Stan.
