Tasmanian Labor leader Rebecca White says the party will not share power with the Greens in the future. White has told Labor’s state conference that past alliances with the Greens were a "mistake", while she claims that the Greens talk down to anyone who disagrees with their views. White says the results of the most recent federal and Tasmanian elections show that Labor needs to reconnect with its traditional voters. With the next Tasmanian election due by March 2022, White says Labor will concentrate on policies to boost jobs and to restore health and other services.

The Tasmanian Government is poised to announce a 2017-18 surplus of $A75m in its June 2018 Budget, compared with its previous forecast of a $A54m surplus. The Budget bottom line will be boosted by higher tax revenue as a result of the state’s strong economy. Measures to be unveiled in the Budget on 14 June include funding for the second stage of the government’s affordable housing scheme and a policy of capping wage rises for public servants at two per cent a year.

Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman has rejected claims by Labor and the Greens that the Liberal Party won the 2018 state election with the assistance of funding from the gambling industry. However, Hodgman says he is open to a review of the state’s rules governing donations to political parties. Hodgman, who is the first Tasmanian Liberal leader to win two successive terms of majority government in more than three decades, has also flagged plans for changes to his cabinet team. The Liberal Party seems likely to win 13-15 seats in the 25-seat lower house.
