The Nine Network’s head of programming Hamish Turner notes that the death of reality television had been forecast two decades ago. However, the format remains as popular as ever, and research from Ampere Analysis has found that unscripted shows now account for 75 per cent of all TV programs that are commissioned worldwide. Unscripted shows also comprise four out of every five TV shows that are commissioned in Australia. Local free-to-air networks will rely heavily on reality TV again in 2025; the Ten Network will broadcast the latest iteration of ‘Big Brother’, more than 20 years after launching the format in Australia.

Nine Entertainment has lost another executive, with the departure of its director of communications and public relations, Victoria Buchan. Interim CEO Matt Stanton has indicated that her exit was by mutual agreement as part of a restructuring of the media group’s leadership team. Buchan’s departure is not believed to be linked to the upcoming release of the findings of an independent review of Nine’s workplace culture. The review was sparked by the exit of Darren Wick, the former director of news and current affairs; Buchan is said to have been close to Wick, who had been accused of inappropriate conduct.

Several sources have indicated that regional broadcaster WIN Corporation is close to finalising a deal to sell Northern Rivers Television to the Ten Network. NRN broadcasts in northern NSW, and the TV station is tipped to fetch significantly less than the $55m that WIN paid for it in 2017. However, divesting NRN would allow WIN owner Bruce Gordon to increase his stake in Nine Entertainment to about 25 per cent by converting cash-settled equity swaps that are held on his behalf by Macquarie Group into shares.

Nine Entertainment Company has advised that CEO Mike Sneesby will step down at the end of September, after more than three years in the role. Nine’s chief finance and strategy officer Matt Stanton will become acting CEO until the media company appoints a permanent replacement. Reece Birtles from institutional investor Martin Currie says Sneesby’s departure was not unexpected, given the challenges that Nine is facing; they include revenue growth, cultural issues and concerns about its Domain property listings business. Nine’s market capitalisation has fallen below $2bn, compared with more than $5bn when Sneesby became CEO in April 2021.

Data from ThinkTV shows that the combined advertising revenue of Australia’s commercial free-to-air broadcasters fell by 8.1 per cent in 2023-24, to $3.3bn. The figures cover metropolitan and regional free-to-air networks, plus their broadcast video-on-demand services; advertising-supported public broadcaster SBS is not included. The advertising revenue of metro and regional FTA networks fell by 12 per cent and 5.5 per cent respectively. However, this was partially offset by a 12.7 per cent increase in BVOD ad revenue.

Former Seven Network regional reporter Olivia Babb has told the ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ program that Seven is "one of the most degrading, soul-crushing places you can work". Babb is one of a number of current and former Seven staff who took part in the program, which alleged that the television network has a culture of bullying, harassment and misogynistic treatment. Employment lawyer Josh Bornstein told the program that there had been a noticeable pattern of hostility towards women at the network. Babb said that she was paid so little that she and other colleagues were often "one or two paychecks from homelessness".

A report from PwC notes that revenue across Australia’s media industry has risen to $62.3bn in the last year, although growth in revenue slowed from 6.6 per cent to just 2.8 per cent. Meanwhile, PwC estimates that digital revenue now accounts for 70 per cent of advertising spending in the media sector, compared with 54 per cent in 2019; the firm has also forecast that this will increase to 79 per cent by 2028. PwC in turn expects advertising revenues from traditional TV broadcasts to fall to around $3.5bn by 2028, while revenue from subscription and ‘catch-up’ services is forecast to rise to a similar level within four years.

Seven West Media veteran Kurt Burnette is said to be among the company’s senior executives to have been retrenched as part of a cost-cutting program. Burnette joined Seven in 1990, and was most recently the media group’s chief revenue officer. Seven Melbourne’s MD Lewis Martin, who is also the head of sport, has also been made redundant, along with chief marketing officer Melissa Hopkins. Recent media reports had revealed that Seven plans to shed up to 150 jobs in response to a difficult advertising market and the looming end of a revenue-sharing deal with Facebook’s parent Meta.

Nine must address ‘issues of the past’, Sneesby tells his staff

Original article by Sophie Elsworth

Nine Entertainment CEO Mike Sneesby told staff in an email on Monday that the company is working to improve its culture, but that this can only be done by "acknowledging the issues of the past". His comments come amid allegations involving two senior male managers that involve "predatory behaviour", and as Kerri-Anne Kennerley, one of Nine’s most admired on-air personalities, stated that there was an entrenched culture of bullying at the television network. Sneesby’s email was sent a week after Peter Costello quit as Nine chairman after an incident with a journalist at Canberra Airport.

Nine Entertainment Company is continuing to attract scrutiny over the sudden resignation of the Nine Network’s director of news and current affairs, Darren Wick. A spokeswoman has confirmed that Nine’s CEO Mike Sneesby had sign off on Wick’s severance pay of almost $1m, and the media group’s board had no role in the payout. It has previously been revealed that the board had discussed allegations that Wick had sexually harassed a number of female colleagues during his long tenure at Nine. Meanwhile, Nine will commission an independent review of its TV newsrooms’ culture in the wake of the allegations against Wick.
