OzTAM will officially launch its new digital TV ratings system in early February 2016. It will measure the number of people who view TV content online and via portable devices. The launch of the Video Player Measurement system has coincided with a decline in the amount of time people spent watching traditional broadcast TV. The Australian Multi-Screen Report shows that this fell from an average of about three hour per day to just two hours and 49 minutes in the December 2014 quarter.

Australia’s domestic Twenty20 competition has been a ratings success for the Ten Network, with each match in the 2015-16 season attracting an average of 1.02 million viewers. Ten’s head of sports David Barham is confident that the network can gain even higher ratings in 2016-17. Ten has paid $A20m a year under its current rights deal, and some industry observers have suggested that the next BBL broadcasting deal could be worth at least $A50m a year.

The Ten Network’s current deal to broadcast the domestic Twenty20 tournament is worth $A20m a year. However, some experts believe that the next Big Bash League (BBL) rights deal could potentially be worth between $A50m and $A60m a year, due to the success of Ten’s coverage. Each match in the 2015-16 BBL series has attracted an average audience of 1.013 million viewers, and Ten’s audience share has increased by 15 per cent year-on-year.

The Seven Network was Australia’s top-rating TV network in 2015, with an overall audience share of 29.3 per cent. This compares with 30.4 per cent in 2014, while the Nine Network’s audience share also fell. However, the Ten Network’s audience share rose by 0.9 per cent to 18.8 per cent. Nine’s Andrew Backwell says the network is not concerned about total viewers, arguing that it was the market leader in the key age demographics in 2015.

TV rating measures stretch to a month

OzTAM’s TV ratings methodology is being updated to embrace time-shifting and multiscreens. The new data will begin to be available later in 2015, and OzTAM will report ratings for programs that are viewed up to 28 days after initial transmission. OzTAM CEO Doug Peiffer says preliminary data suggests that taking time-shifting into account can lift a program’s overall ratings by up to 10 per cent. He adds that multiscreen data is unlikely to have much impact on ratings, as most people still watch traditional TV.

ABC, SBS making ‘noise’ to compete

Original article by Michael Bodey
The Australian – Page: 23 : 24-Aug-15

Australia’s public broadcasters, the SBS and ABC, are ratings-driven despite reassurances to the contrary. They recently tried to use terrorist sympathiser Zaky Mallah to increase their ratings which was an exercise in cynicism. ABC MD Mark Scott keeps saying that the public broadcaster does not need to seek higher ratings but this is just rhetoric.
