The Seven Network boasts a 30 per cent audience share so far in the 2015 ratings year, compared with 31.2 per cent at the same time in 2014. Nine Network’s audience share has fallen to 27.6 per cent, while Ten Network has increased its share. However, Nine has won every week of the prime-time news ratings battle in both Sydney and Melbourne. Nine’s evening news bulletin has benefited from a strong lead from "Millionaire Hot Seat", while "A Current Affair" is dominating the 7pm timeslot.

Nine Entertainment Company will increase its investment in Australian drama, after deciding not to renew its content deal with US-based Warner Bros. Nine Network programming director Andrew Backwell says local drama is generally rating well, while the plethora of options available for viewing US drama means such shows no longer attract large audiences in Australia. He adds that piracy is not such a big issue with local drama. Nine will continue to buy current TV shows from Warner Bros.

Preliminary data from audience ratings provider OzTAM indicate that new reality TV show "I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!" has been very successful for Ten Network. It managed a total viewers figure of 1.1999 million on 1 February 2015, despite coverage of the Australian Open Tennis tournament’s finals by rival Seven West Media at the same time. Ten CEO Hamish McLennan says the free-to-air TV group should be given a greater share of the advertising spend by media buyers. Ten is also looking at takeover offers, but 14.99% shareholder Bruce Gordon remains a hurdle

Beverley McGarvey, chief programming officer at Ten Network, is confident a local version in Australia of "I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!" will generate good audience ratings for the listed free-to-air TV group. The format is being imported from ITV in the UK, where it continues to perform strongly after 14 seasons. McGarvey also claims not to be distracted by the current takeover battle for Ten, as major investor Bruce Gordon opposed an offer by Foxtel and Discovery Communications despite it being backed by fellow shareholders Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer

Coverage of the Twenty20 Big Bash League cricket competition has boosted the audience ratings of commercial free-to-air TV group Ten Network, to a 10-year high of 730,000 for the summer 2014-15 season. The gain of 5.9% in the 25-to-54-year-olds age bracket will strengthen Ten’s position as it resumes takeover talks with suitors such as Anchorage Capital, Saban Capital, and a consortium of Foxtel and Discovery Communications. The latter are offering $A0.23 a share

The South Sydney team on 5 October 2014 won the National Rugby League grand final against Canterbury, its first such victory since 1961. The telecast of the match also brought an all-time high audience figure of close to 2.6 million for free-to-air TV network Nine. Increased merchandise sales and a boost in club membership numbers after the success will mean South Sydney records a net profits of nearly $A2m for 2014. Controversy has engulfed Rowen Craigie, CEO of South Sydney sponsor Crown Resorts, after he allegedly supported Canterbury

Despite Seven West Media agreeing to let pay TV provider Fox Sports simulcast almost all Australian Football League (AFL) matches, the free-to-air network is set to record a gain in audience ratings for the 2014 season. The AFL grand final played on 27 September appears likely to be the most-watched program for the year, with an average capital city viewers figure of 2.813 million. At the same time the ratings for National Rugby League matches have declined compared with 2013, dragging down the performance of main Seven rival Nine Entertainment

TV networks not on the same wavelength: Why NRL clubs want more Sunday games

Original article by Brad Walter

The Nine Network and Fox Sports like National Rugby League (NRL) matches to be scheduled on Thursday nights, as the timeslot attracts high ratings. However, attendance at Thursday night matches tend to be low, and NRL teams suggest that playing matches on Sunday afternoons would draw a much bigger crowd. Likewise, Monday night matches are popular with TV viewers but often attract low crowd numbers
