Network Ten has secured the free-to-air and digital rights to the 2019 Rugby World Cup, which will be held in Japan from 20 September to 2 November. The final will be held on the same day as Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup carnival. Ten CEO Paul Anderson says the Rugby World Cup will be the biggest sporting event in the world in 2019, while he has declined to state how much Ten paid for the rights. Ten’s deal gives it the rights to 10 World Cup matches across linear television and broadcast video on demand, including all games featuring Australia

CBS gears for Ten All Access streaming service launch

CBS will enter the Australian streaming market in December with the launch of Ten All Access. Its US equivalent CBS All Access costs $US5.99 with advertisements a month, and it is expected that Ten All Access will cost between $6 and $7 a month. Meanwhile, chief content officer Beverley McGarvey says Ten’s plans for 2019 include renewals for "The Bachelor" and "Survivor", while she has denied reports that CBS wanted some of Ten’s news personalities to have voice coaching.

Seven production head Brad Lyons takes redundancy

Seven’s director of production Brad Lyons will leave the television station at the end of 2017, after he opted to take a voluntary redundancy. Lyons joined Seven in 1997, with "Dancing with the Stars", "My Kitchen Rules", and "The Amazing Race Australia" just some of the programs he has been involved with. CEO Tim Worner noted that Lyons was held in high regard by both Australian and overseas production firms, and that he had made an "outstanding contribution" to Seven.

Nine exposed to potential class action over Don Burke allegations

The Nine Network is to investigate sexual harassment, bullying and assault allegations made against Don Burke by female staff and associates. The accusations against Burke, host of the long-running "Burke’s Backyard" show that was broadcast on Nine, were made as part of an investigation by the ABC and Fairfax Media. Roger Singh from Shine Lawyers notes media firms could be hit with significant damages claims if it was found they were negligent in their duty of care in terms of staff that had been the subject of abuse.

Seven reaches out to culture critics

Television network Seven is keen to work with the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance over concerns the journalists’ union has with its work culture. It has also invited journalist Tracey Spicer, who voiced similar concerns on an ABC television program, to meet with CEO Tim Worner. A spokesperson for Seven notes that 60 per cent of its newsroom producers and journalists are female, while it has been pointed out that it would not have been able to achieve the ongoing success that it has if it did not have a good team culture.

‘Scrap quotas’ for unloved kids’ TV

Longstaff is the acting CEO of FreeTV, which has called for the scrapping of quotas for children’s television as part of its submission to a government review into Australian television content. WIN’s Gordon lifts stake in Ten

Bruce Gordon has raised his stake in Network Ten to 14.96 per cent, from 14.56 per cent. The transaction, involving ordinary shares and a derivative contract in Deutsche Bank, was executed via Gordon’s private investment vehicle Birketu. The billionaire believes that Ten shares are undervalued.

News Corporation, Seven West Media and Telstra have signed a broadcasting rights deal with Australian Football League (AFL). The $A2.508 billion six-year agreement is the largest sports rights deal in Australian television history. News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch said on 18 August 2015 that the AFL code is considered by the company as the premium code in Australia.

SMI: Ten’s revenue share rises as rivals tumble with newspapers down nearly 30 per cent

The July 2015 Standard Media Index (SMI) shows that Network Ten increased its share of ad revenue from media agencies by 3.2 per cent to 24.4 per cent, year-on-year. Newspapers recorded sharp falls, with media agency spend declining 29.4 per cent to $A47.2 million, $A19.6 million less than in July 2014. Digital bookings rose 6.7 per cent to $A123.5 million although late digital bookings are expected to cause the paid media market for July to be flat. In television, ad spending rose 3.2 per cent to $A301.3 million, while radio was up 0.4 per cent to $A47.2 million. Cinema recorded a rise of 43.6 per cent, to $A5.8 million. Outdoor declined 10.1 per cent to $A53.3 million while magazines recorded a fall in spend of 16.9 per cent to $A15.1 million. Among categories, food/alcoholic retail spending rose 33.5 per cent to $A32.2 million. The restaurants category improved year on year with bookings rising 16.6 per cent in July to $A28.6 million.

Nine to bid for AFL rights after $925m NRL deal

Fresh from agreeing to pay $A925 million for the National Rugby League television rights for five years from 2018, Channel Nine will try to wrest some Australian rules football matches from the Seven Network. Though Seven and Foxtel are the current rights holders, Nine is expected to bid for at least two Australian Football League matches a week as it seeks to boost its sports content.
