Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says the federal government’s proposed legislation will crack down on hate groups that do not currently meet the criteria for being listed as a proscribed terrorist organisation. Burke has indicated that Hizb ut-Tahrir and the National Socialist Network are among those that will be targeted, stating that such groups hate Australia and should not be operating in this country. He adds that both Hizb ut-Tahrir and the National Socialist Network "have gone right to the limits of the law" but avoided prosecution under existing hate laws. Dr Josh Roose from Deakin University says the new laws should also target individuals who operating outside of established groups and extremist online ‘influencers’.

Ambassador expelled, terror law changes: Iran’s brazen antisemitic attacks on Australian soil

Original article by Matthew Knott, Paul Sakkal
The Age – Page: Online : 27-Aug-25

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the federal government is taking "strong and decisive action" after ASIO advised that Iran had directed at least two arson attacks on Australia’s Jewish community. Albanese says the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne and a kosher cafe in Sydney in 2024 were "extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression" orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil. He adds that they were attempts to "undermine social cohesion and sow discord" in the community. The goverment has expelled Iran’s ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and given him seven days to leave Australia; it has also closed Australia’s embassy in Tehran and indicated that it intends to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team has been deployed to investigate a suspected plot to target Jewish Australians, after NSW police discovered a caravan packed with explosives in the north-west Sydney suburb of Dural. A note identifying a Jewish target – which is said to be a Sydney synagogue – was found in the caravan, and Deputy Police Commissioner Dave Hudson estimates that the explosives were sufficient to create a blast zone radius of 40 metres. NSW police found the caravan 10 days ago, and argue that publicly disclosing the incident may have compromised their investigation; it was only revealed after being leaked to the media on Wednesday. Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the owner of the caravan is in custody, although he has not yet been charged with any offence.

Travel warning for Jewish visitors to Australia after synagogue attack

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre is set to advise Jewish people worldwide to reconsider non-essential travel to Australia in the wake of the arson attack on the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne. The US-based Jewish human rights organisation’s associate dean Rabbi Abraham Cooper says it issues travel advisories infrequently and only when fears for Jews’ safety reach crisis levels; it has not previously issued a travel warning against Australia. Meanwhile, a taskforce has been established to investigate the firebombing; sources have indicated that three suspects have been identified, and the attack is being treated as politically rather than religiously motivated.

Greens’ divisive rhetoric is fuelling domestic terror threat: PM

Original article by Ben Packham
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 6-Aug-24

The federal government has advised that the nation’s terrorism threat alert will be raised from ‘possible’ to ‘probable’. ASIO’s director-general Mike Burgess has warned that the chance of a terrorist attack in the next 12 months is now more than 50 per cent. He adds that young ‘lone-wolf’ terrorists armed with guns and knives pose the biggest risk. Burgess says that while the Israel-Hamas war is contributing to the growing threat of a terrorist attack, social media is being used to radicalise people and to spread extremist ideologies and conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Greens have contributed to the growing tensions within the community with their stance on issues such as the war in Gaza.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened a meeting of cabinet’s National Security Committee on Tuesday morning in response to the stabbing of a Christian bishop, which has been designated a terrorist attack by NSW police. Albanese says the attack is being investigated by a joint counter-terrorism team. He has urged Australians to unite, and stressed that respect for each other must be maintained at all times. ASIO’s director-general Mike Burgess says the terrorist attack appears to be religiously motivated, but he adds that the 16-year-old perpetrator seems to have acted alone. Burgess also says Australia’s terrorism threat level remains at ‘possible’.

Original article by Paul Sakkal
The Age – Page: Online : 30-Jan-24

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has told an ABC documentary that chronicles the former Coalition government’s nine years in power that Tony Abbott was a "very dangerous prime minister". Turnbull, who toppled Abbott in 2015, claims that Abbott sought to exaggerate the threat of terrorism in order to frighten people, and that he was too forceful in his response to Russia in the wake of the downing of flight MH17 in 2014 in which 38 Australians died. Abbott, who did not take part in the documentary, has been approached for comment.
