A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 27.1 per cent of Australians aged 14+ (or 5.3 million people) reported having heard of Airbnb in the six months to December 2015. While this is a substantially lower recognition rate than more established tourism industry players such as Flight Centre (70 per cent) and Webjet.com.au (52.2 per cent), it puts Airbnb ahead of well-known operators like STA Travel (26.9 per cent), Lastminute.com.au (25.8 per cent) and Stayz (23 per cent). Meanwhile, 7.7 per cent of Australians say they would consider using Airbnb for their next holiday, making it the fifth-most considered travel agent/booking site after Flight Centre, Booking.com, Wotif, and Webjet.com.au.

Deloitte Access Economics states in a report written for Austrade that the tourism industry will experience a shortage of 38,000 workers if no appropriate measures are taken to alleviate it. More than 120,000 extra workers will be needed by the end of the decade. Martin Ferguson, the chairman of Tourism Accommodation Australia, has called for changes to visa rules that would make it easier for foreigners to apply for working-holiday visas.

Penalty rates are real money for real people

Original article by Jo-Anne Schofield
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 63 : 29-Oct-15

There is pressure from employers in Australia’s hospitality and tourism sectors to reduce weekend penalty rates, but such a move would be unfair to workers. They often earn close to the minimum wage. Employers claim that the reduction in penalty rates would have beneficial effects, but their arguments are flawed.

Ride on: the holiday habits of regular cyclists

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-Sep-15

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey (July 2014 – June 2015) has found that cycling participation in Australia has risen dramatically over the last few years. Just over 1.5 million Australians aged 14+ (some eight per cent of the population) regularly ride a bike. Regular cyclists are far more likely than the average Australian to name certain destinations as places they’d like to spend a domestic holiday. South Australian (SA) regions feature prominently: regular cyclists are 140 per cent more likely than the average Australian to nominate the Adelaide Hills as somewhere they’d like to visit, 138 per cent more likely to name the Riverlands/Renmark/Blanchetown region, and 119 per cent more likely to name the Flinders Ranges. These regions are all notable for their popular cycling paths. Outside of SA, other destinations more popular with regular cyclists than the average Australian tend towards high-altitude areas (Falls Creek; Mt Buffalo/Mt Baw Baw/Lake Mountain) and Queensland’s Stanthorpe.
