Allegro buys The Ghan and Indian Pacific trains

Allegro Funds has paid an undisclosed price for Great Southern Rail, which operates iconic Australian train services The Ghan and The Indian Pacific. The vendor was Serco, which has owned Great Southern Rail since 1999. International tourists account for around 25 per cent of passengers on the two trains, and Allegro MD Adrian Loader anticipates continued strong growth in demand for upmarket rail travel

Qantas Haneda access will increase capacity to Japan

Qantas will commence daily flights to the Japanese airports of Narita and Haneda from August 2015, after the carrier was given access to the latter. Qantas will offer more flights to Japan as a result, and Peter Harbison of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation expects services to Haneda to focus on premium business travellers as the airport is much closer to the Tokyo CBD. More Australian holiday-makers choosing to cruise

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 10,699,000 Australians aged 14+ took at least one holiday of at least three nights’ duration in the year to June 2014. Some 4.5 per cent of these people opted for a cruise holiday for their last long trip, compared with just 3.2 per cent in the year to June 2011. The South Pacific was the most popular cruise destination in the year to June 2014, while 33.4 per cent of Australians who opted for a cruise holiday were in the 50-64 age group and 37.5 per cent were aged 65+
