The Supreme Court of Western Australia has not released its ruling on a legal challenge to the state government’s decision to approve Cameco’s Yeelirrie uranium mine. However, it has been revealed that federal Environment Minister Melissa Price approved the project one day before the election was called. Mia Pepper, a spokeswoman for the Conservation Council of WA, has described Price’s decision to approve the mine as
"premature and highly political".

The Conservation Council of Western Australia will pursue legal action in a bid to overturn environmental approval for the Yeelirrie uranium mine. The former Liberal government approved the project prior to the 2017 state election, but the CCWA will argue that this approval may be legally invalid. There are concerns that Cameco’s Yeelirrie project may threaten a species of stygofauna. However, the low price of uranium may be the biggest deterrent to Cameco proceeding with the project in the near-term.

Canada-based Cameco will not be able to proceed with the Yeelirrie uranium mine in Western Australia due to concerns about its impact on the habitat of stygofauna. The state’s Environmental Protection Authority ruled that the proposed mine would put at risk the future of 11 species of the prawn-like crustacean, although Cameco is optimistic that the project can still gain environmental approval. However, it concedes that the project would not be economically viable given the current price of uranium.
