A Senate committee has called for guidelines to be put in place to ensure that there are "public safety zones" around airports. Such zones permit aircraft to make emergency landings or take evasive action without the risk of hitting buildings, but no such guidelines are in place in Australia. The committee noted that commercial and housing developments near airports represents a significant safety risk, while the Australian & International Pilots Association notes that buildings near runways can cause turbulent wakes when the wind is strong.

Research by the Reserve Bank of Australia has concluded that development restrictions have been a major contributor to the sharp rise in house prices over the last two decades. The central bank says that state and local government zoning rules have increased the price of the average house in Sydney by 42 per cent, and 29 per cent in Brisbane. The Reserve Bank suggests that measures such as relaxing building height limits could help to increase housing affordability.

Morrison targets cost of housing

Original article by Laura Tingle

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison notes that the proportion of Australians who own their home has fallen from 71 per cent to 67 per cent over the last two decades. However, he will argue in a speech on 24 October 2016 that housing supply is the main factor that is affecting housing affordability. He will also say that a range of other factors rather than the impact of property investors is affecting housing affordability. Morrison will also flag a push for greater co-operation with state governments to make more land available for residential development.
