Melbourne’s train network may be hit by work bans and stoppages after about 99 per cent of Rail, Tram & Bus Union members voted to take industrial action over stalled negotiations regarding a new enterprise agreement. RTBU state secretary Luba Grigorovitch says the union has been holding talks with Metro Trains for five months, and members will try to minimise the impact of any disruption for commuters. The union is seeking a pay rise of six per cent for Metro’s operational staff, whose existing enterprise agreement expired at the start of July.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 1-Apr-19

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey shows that more than 2.9 million Melburnians use public transport in an average three months (equivalent to over 71% of residents of Victoria’s capital). Some 39% of Melbourne’s public transport users have the Android operating system on their main mobile phone, while 48% use an Apple iPhone. Analysis shows that Millennials will derive the greatest benefit from the new Myki app, which allows Victorians to pay their public transport fare via a mobile phone (although it is currently only available on Android phones). Some 47% of Melbourne transport users in the Millennial generation use phones with an Android operating system, compared with just 21% of Melbourne transport users in the Pre-Boomer generation.

The Victorian Government has banned Sky News broadcasts on Melbourne train station platforms in the wake of the channel’s controversial interview with right-wing extremist Blair Cottrell. Transport Minister Jacinta Allan sought to defend the ban during an interview on Sky News, but she was informed that the Cottrell interview had not been broadcast on the rail network. Sky News content has been broadcast at train stations since 2015, but it is limited to news stories, sports highlights and weather reports.
